Qantas 747 Buzzes The GG Bridge

Sun Aug 13, 2000 2:31 am

I certainly missed it, but the San Francisco Examiner reports that a Qantas 747 got ATC clearance to perform a low-flight maneuver over the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco Bay, and the San Francisco skyline yesterday (August 11, 2000). The airliner flew up from LAX followed by a small plane with photographer in tow, since the final results will be seen in a commercial during the Summer Olympics.

Quite interesting since they no longer fly to San Francisco.

I say since they "love" LA so much, let them buzz the beautiful port of LA/Long Beach or the bacteria-laden beaches of Orange County. Perhaps the haze was too much even for the Aussies!

Or they could fly over Compton with convenient stray-bullet pyrotechnic effects.

Bacteria laden beaches of Orange County? Ummm...Johnboy, where are you from? You sound a bit bitter that Qantas serves LAX and not SFO...

Sorry, I meant to say "human waste laden beaches of Orange, Los Angeles, and Ventura Counties." My mistake!

Hey, if they don't serve SFO, then don't take advantage of our natural beauty......

Could be they plan to return to SFO real soon and this was for developing advertising material.

UA currently has a daily SYD-SFO service which has great load factors. Maybe QF are finally realising not everyone wants to see the delights of LAX.

Get over it Johnboy. QF flies to the UNITED STATES. SFO is in the United States and I'm sure plenty of people that fly in LAX on QF also visit SFO thereby helping YOUR local economy. So dont knock it - think of the big picture

Rumour has it, that Qantas do plan to return to SFO in the very near future, and lets hope they do.

It should be noted that in the last big advert campaign, where the "I Still Call Australia Home" song was used, New York appeared even thou Qantas didn't fly there. Many people questioned this obvious oversight, and low & behold, Qantas now fly to JFK 5 days a week, with daily services planned for next year.

So maybe SFO is closer than you think, and the advert is just to start people thinking about QF in SFO.

Poor Johnboy, he's bitter, and envious, that Qantas serves LAX and not SFO (stupid thing to be so bitter about) and it's obvious and pathetic.

He's probably also one of those Kooks who wants to split the state in two....

Why don't you support the whole state rather than living in your self centered world...

Hey, I can understand why people don't like LA if they live anywhere else in California (I assume and hope he does)! I agree with him. LAX steals almost all of the international traffic from SAN and lots of it from SFO. And Los Angeles is not exactly an entirely pretty little town. There are something like 10-12 codeshare flights a day from SFO to LAX that have flight numbers from QF or ANZ.
