Most have a minimum age of 21 because they do serve alcohol. I'm assuming some states may not allow anyone under 21 to serve.

Interesting question comes up here. There are plenty of states that allow 18 and above to serve alcohol. What is the rule for airlines that land in states with various legal serving ages?

Many years ago the MAXIMUM age was 29. Or, once they got married, then they had to quit.

Yep, that all went away after the 70s. Big grin

Skyway dba Midwest Connect is 18 and I think Midwest is 18 also.

I can I ask why on earth does she want to be an F/A?

But back to the thread topic. Your friend should start off as a gate agent and see how the airline runs and treats their employees. Also she would get to deal with the same crazy and pissed off people but not be confined to an airplane for hours with them.

For airline work you can be 18 and serve alcohol.

Here at YX the minimum is age is 18, but now may not be the best time to apply....

Most regionals are 18. I know we usually have a few 18 year olds.

A lot of regionals have height limitations. From the Skywest FA career page: "Your height must be between 5'0 and 5'8 without shoes due to the internal size of our aircraft. For your safety, there are no exceptions to this requirement. Your height will be verified at the time of interview."

AA had a FA that retired a while back, but when she retired I think she was around 75 or so. She went WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back to DC3 days. Heck AA has an employee that just had his 60! year anniversary with the company. He is 82 now and has no plans to retire.

I started with XJ when I was 19, minimum age was 18. I'm not sure if theres is still the same or not. You can serve alcohol at 18.

A lot more airlines used to hire at 18. Now a majority of them are 20-21, but there are some that will hire at 18. 99% of those are regionals

I dunno about the US. In Canada (at least for drinking) it depends on what province the airline is registered in. WestJet is registered in Alberta, therefor being allowed to serve it to 18 year olds. AC is registered in multiple locations, so they abide by the rules of the departure city. Eg, YYC-YVR would have a limit of 18 but YVR-YYC would have a limit of 19. I think the same rules would apply to the server, but hey, what do I know?

I don't know how it is at other airlines, but here at Southwest I have noticed our classes have more older FA's in them. Some of them are starting with us in their 50's and 60's . This may be the result of many things; a better work ethic, competition in the industry. I think it has to do with keeping costs down. These FA's will in theory be with us less time and not reach maximum pay! But who know.

You don't really hear the word "rich" and "captain" in the same sentence anymore. Especially one thats middle aged. If thats her goal, I'd tell her to try for Emirates.

Bit off topic here, but a thought just came to me. I was looking at job's with Emirates in CHC, and to be a ticket/gate agent a photograph was required. It even went on to say that there should be more than one and be professionally done, because DXB is the fashion capital of the world... according to them.

This is actually great advice, after working for OO as a ramp/cs agent and ground handling Mesa flights, I would NEVER put my CV anywhere close to Mesa! But if you arent involved with the airline industry, people just don't know.

Not sure what the usual minimum age is for most non-US carriers but at LX it's 18.
http://www.swiss.com/web/EN/about_sw...es/requirements_cabincrew_zrh.aspx

By the way, in Switzerland the minimum drinking age is 16 for beer and wine and 18 for everything else. Fortunately, like most of Europe, you have to be 18 to get a driver's license.

If she wanted to start off her career with a bang and start flying interesting routes right away, shouldn't she go for one of the Middle Eastern giants, i.e. Emirates or Etihad? I dont mention Qatar here because I've heard only very negative things about working as a cabin crew, especially as a woman with that airline. Mind you, all that information has come from these forums of pprune, so I don't really know anything first hand. I'm sure EK and EY have a lower minimum age than most US carriers simply by virtue of alcohol laws.

I thought you had to be 21 years or older. That is only because of the sale of alcohol. And if your working for a company that use CRJ's or Saab's, then you would be the only F/A on that aircraft.

In most states you can get your liquor licsense as young as 18. When I waited tables in Indiana, the age was 19 to get your premit to be able to bring drinks to the table. But again, I have never seen the po-po on a commercail flight watching the F/A to make sure they dont touch the booze.
