Air India Nonstop From BOM To JFK

Wed Aug 01, 2007 9:30 pm

Today Air India starts a direct flight between Mumbai and New York. I think given their new first and business class cabins on their brand new 777-200LR, they are going to give American and Continental some serious competition on this nonstop route.

Wouldn't this be competition for Delta? Don't they fly this route?

Our local AI office in SFO was pretty upset that the flight was only loaded a few weeks before the start of service. They felt there was no time to sell it, and the first flights are indeed going with light loads. But I'm sure things will pick up soon!

Generally speaking the letters start with the highest fare and descend from left to right. They may not always show all seats available and instead show a maximum of usually 4 or 9, regardless of how many seats are actually available. So in this case

...there are at least two seats available in F and A (probably both first class), at least four available in J, C, and D (probably all Business), and at least four in W, Y and B (likely all economy). As the flight sells out, they'll close the lowest fares from right to left, so if the cheapest fare is showing seats available, it's likely that there are still quite a few seats available.

No, currently they are only competing w/DL on the nonstop JFK-BOM route. AA only flies ORD-DEL nonstop and CO currently only flies EWR-DEL nonstop. CO will begin serving BOM nonstop from EWR in October.

Instead of "seats available", aren't these numbers showing "bookings accepted"? You may buy these 4 seats and end up but be denied boarding due to overbooking.

Seats available to purchase are not always equal to empty seats

By the way is the BLR-SFO service just thinking out aloud by some AI official or is it under serious consideration?

They're arguably the same thing, seeing as a (proper) airline won't sell you a seat if it believes there won't be one available, inclusive of overbookings.

Air India had a huge spread in the NY Times yesterday, one of the best airline ads I've ever seen IMO. At the top is a q & a with the CEO about the 777-200LR, and Air India's future plans for the 787. Expect nonstops from the US to Bangalore and Chennai.

At the bottom of the page was all about the 777-200LR and their new service features, again it was the best airline advertisement I've seen in a long time. I wish someone would scan it, my scanner is too small.

NY flight takes off near-empty, but Air India hopeful of better numbers.
http://avindia.blogspot.com/

Quotes:
Even as Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel flagged off Air India’s inaugural non-stop flight to New York amid much fanfare early on Wednesday, the flag carrier’s top brass mulled over the near-empty Boeing 777-200LR that pushed back from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at 12:45 am.

For onboard the “historic” flight were a meagre 80-odd passengers—including a dozen freeloaders—as against the 238 seats available. Or a paltry 33 per cent load. What’s worse: things don’t appear much better for the first fortnight either.
“As per booking details available for the first 10 days, the average load will be around 40 per cent or 95 passengers per flight, which is much lower than expected,” revealed a source. During the same period, Delta Airlines—the only other airline offering a non-stop service between the two financial nerve centers—has a handful tickets available, that too in the higher classes.

Air India had opened bookings with fares over 30 per cent higher than the industry average on the sector, which were later brought at par, because of slow bookings. Yet, Air India’s target of a 75 per cent average load factor—roughly 178 seats—on the popular route seem far off: the poorest capacity will be on their second flight, with merely 56 passengers holding reservations, followed by the third flight that will have as few as 62 fliers.

Sorry to rain on anyones parade but isnt a 14 hour sit time in JFK a bit much, and costly?

Could the route be extended to Houston, Dallas, or Miami?

AI needs a IAD-DEL/BOM non-stop to fill the loads...hehehehe j/k

I am sure the loads will eventually pick up, JFK is a huge market for AI, but starting IAD won't be a bad idea (no non-stop to India). So get those planes and start the IAD service  Smile

I think all these cities will eventually get their own service from one of the airlines in India, if not daily at least thrice a week or so. I have feeling that the 14 hrs ground time for the LR is only temporary until the DEL-JFK flights starts whence the aircraft operating AI 141 BOM-JFK will return to DEL operating the west bound leg of future flight 150(?).

A 9:30 AM departure would be great with the DEL flight arriving in the afternoon around 12:00 PM thus keeping the crew at JFK busy all day. For AI the day at JFK would look be:

Arr. BOM 7:10 AM
Dep. DEL 9:30 AM
Arr. DEL 12:00 PM
Dep. BOM 2:30 PM, thus getting in to BOM in the afternoon for connections
Arr. LHR 3:45 PM
Dep. LHR 7:15 PM

or some thing like that..

That would be surprising given the absolute lack of interest that UA have recently shown in restarting service to India. And given that they don't have any new a/c they could use to offer the service (unless it means pulling the plug on an existing route). Both UA and AC have started service numerous times (to India), but ultimately both have chosen to stay away.

I am sure IAD will commence sooner than DAL or even DFW... so you might wish to join the line behind me.... Big grin

But i am sure AI has a plan for expansion, they just don't know yet..it will be last minute...once their new a/c start to come in, they might surprise us with some new N. American routes.

I am not sure who (Kaitak...maybe) has speculated what routes AI could offer and also some people have posted clippings of newspapers where Thulsidas has shown interest in airports like IAH, IAD etc etc., maybe even DFW (i don't know about DAL).

Nonetheless, good luck to you  Smile

I just landed at JFK a few hours ago on VS045 and I must say the new AI 777 looks beautiful. It was parked behind the usual 747 and it looked a lot shinier!

On my inbound trip to LHR I noticed AI's "Tanjore" langushing at a gate. Time for a wash and wax!

Also, I would like to claim a first - my VS flight today was parked at a Heathrow T5 gate and we were bused to board it. Does that me me the first passenger on a.net to use T5?  Smile

Feroze, good question, I was wondering about it too.

Actually coming to think of it - it will make more sense for AI to operate its LR on this route considering UA 777s don't have legs to do this route. This will give AI pax a lot more connection opportunities than via JFK. Damn it... don't care who - just start a IAD-BOM non-stop  Smile

This would make sense if UA showed any interest in operating to India. The last I checked with my friends at UA, I was told to not hold my breath. They seem obsessed with China at this poibt and seem content with their revenue share deal with LH as far as India is concerned.

I would love to see an IAD-BOM (which seems unliklely given UA fleet status) or even better a NRT-BLR/MAA route. Will UA listen?

This ad was splashed in the TOI as well about a week ago. Here's something that intrigued me:

I see a very common error in the assembly of snap on type aircraft models that airlines often hand out to agents or to their line offices. The person who assembles these tend to put the horizontal stab in an anhedral (drooping down) rather than the correct dihedral (angled upward) position. Maybe they need to look at a real aircraft closely to see how the horizontal stabs are actually placed relative to the fuselage.

Why I raise this point here is because even in the AI ad, its very obvious that they have used a B777-200LR model in their colors rather than a real aircraft. Then comes my query... are the horizontal stabs actually anhedral on this model... (meaning that some jerk assembled it in this fashion and put it in front of the camera for the shoot)... or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

Affirmative, Andhra Pradesh and Assam, if we are to believe Cricket. Also a daily BOM-JFK cannot be operated with one aircraft. Arunachal Pradesh should also be in the country by now. By the way. AI 141 got in at 7 am on 8/3

When.

I believe it arrived the same day as -ALA. From what I've seen/read -ALC was the one that was escorted by the fighters while -ALA was on the ground.
