Oprah Charters 4 "jumbo Jets" From AA?!?

Thu Aug 02, 2007 1:48 am

Hi guys

We all know the competence of the media and their accuracy as far as aviation material goes. Listen to this:

I am watching "The Fabulous life: Jaw dropping celebrity splurges" and they showing Oprah and mentioned how she charters 4 "Jumbo Jets" from AA to fly over a 1000 employees and their families to hawaii.

So first of all, since when did AA buy the 747 again? (Sarcasm)

What did she actually charter?

Sorry i dont have a link to that, but has anyone else watched it to bear testimony to this factually wrong statement?

regards
nitin

PS: they also went to the extent to show 4 747's while mentioning it.

How long ago was this? It could have been back when they did have 747's...

From the Compact Oxford English Dictionary:

jumbo jet (n): a very large airliner carrying several hundred passengers.

As to the 747 specifically, well, sometime back in the '70s. NASA has a couple of them now.

Big version: Width: 562 Height: 383 File size: 108kb

yep, several is 3 or more but not too many. "More than 2, but not many." AA has no jumbo jets, only midsized jets as none of their jets carry "several hundred passengers."

Before the 773 and A346, there was only one "jumbo jet" which was the 747 (other than high density smaller jets, I guess).

It may have been a mix of 763 and 772 if they had to fly over 1000. Can't see AA having 4 777s available at once for charter.

IIRC, she chartered (4) 763 Aircraft from AA to take everyone to Hawaii.

She chartered 4 767s to bring her entire staff and thier families to Hawaii for an entire week. A friend of mine was acatually on the trip. Oprah of course flew in her private jet though.

Fair enough.

In this context, I would probably make a half-hearted argument that "several" is an appropriate measure kicking in anywhere above two, thereby rendering "several" as applicable to, say, 2.4 hundred-units, but this would mainly be a tedious exercise designed to avoid admitting that I may have been wrong.

I watched her episode detailing the trip to Hawaii and she referred to "our friends at AA". At no point did Oprah have clips of 747s but instead 767s and 777s. Its very possible that the Fabulous Life, not Oprah used the incorrect clips.

The reference to AA would suggest that it was joint venture, they are the official airline of the show and fly all guests to Chicago. My guess is that the charters were paid for but that AA didn't make much money on it, and enjoyed the good publicity.

Is the name (nickname?) JUMBO exclusively used for the 747? I´ve seen loads of news material referring to a multitude of aircrafts as Jumbo....even the A340....
but afterall, what do they know?

Given the loyalty of her fans, Oprah name dropping AA once or twice in a well watched show is worth more in revenue than any expense AA may have incurred providing the jets for the trip.

On the one hand, I'm embarrassed to say that I understood immediately what you meant, given that some consider the 747 to be "the" "Jumbo Jet".

However, I have to say that having a discussion on a topic so incredibly picayune just snapped the needle right off my NerdOMeter.

Fact is, it's entirely understandable that a show like the one being discussed would pump up the "luxuriousness" of Oprah's spending, and wouldn't hesitate to call any kind of big airplane a "jumbo jet", and that any normal person would consider a plane that holds 250 people to be a "jumbo" airplane. I personally think that it tends to demean the more useful technical postings here for us to chastise a non-news program for calling a big plane "jumbo". I would want to save the hyper-detailed analysis for when it matters (like with regard to how an aircraft accident is explained).

On the other hand, it's a free country. Even if it isn't entirely so on a.net.

Okay, I'm done. Talk amongst yourselves.

I am positive that AA does not have any 747 on fleet. The largest one they have is Boeing 777. It will be interest to figure out where they able to get 747 for AA with paint on it. Also Oprah is flithy rich woman. She has money, I mean has MONEY!! So she can afford to pay for company's vacation to Hawaii.

LOL! Exactly my thinking.

In earlier parlance, "Jumbo" was any widebody. 747, DC10, TriStar, A300 counted. (And to really raise some of your hackles, a "jumbo" was sometimes synonymous with an "airbus", a term used by some press and literature to describe DC10s and Tristars.) If the A300 counted as a jumbo, so could a 767. Certainly a 777 could. American owns both 767s and 777s. They therefore fly, thinking broadly, "Boeing Jumbo Jets". Didn't American once play up the widebody experience on the 767 as the same as what they had on DC10s? While the tabloid program was sort of stretching the point, I wouldn't call them wrong. Showing 4 747s as stock footage for example, well, that would be "wrong", but outside of our circles, does it really matter beyond the brief humor value to air nerds?

For a long time, any widebody was called a jumbo jet. It just happens that the 747 has always been the widebody most identified with the term.

Quoting Deaphen (Reply 3):

True, but they did mention "Boeing Jumbo Jets".

Which could include DC-10s, MD-11s, 767s or 777s as well as 747s.

Just for fun, I looked up some non-747 Jumbo Jet references, some from reputable print media, some from the airlines themselves, and a couple weird ones.

In Time magazine, 1977, a story about the A300, "The poor man's jumbo jet" http://www.time.com/time/magazine/ar...171,915633,00.html?iid=chix-sphere

New York Times, 1990, AA purchases "MD-11 jumbo jets"
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpag...9C0CE1DD123BF930A25750C0A966958260
Several other NYTimes references to MD-11 jumbo jets elsewhere.

NYTimes refers to the A300 as a jumbo jet in news on the AA 587 crash.

From AA's own website, concerning their history and heritage aircraft (http://www.aa.com/content/amrcorp/corporateInformation/facts/historicaircraft.jhtml)

Quote:
In March 1966, American Airlines issued a request to Douglas for a "Jumbo Twin" airliner.

which we of course know became the DC10.
AA calls their 747, 767, A300, DC-10, MD-11, and 777 "luxury liners". So, while there are differences, they were trying to market a similar experience, I venture a "jumbo jet" experience.

And for the bizarre...
A magic act at a Reno hotel had, for their finale, the vanishing of an "American Airlines Jumbo Jet". Sure looks like AA livery, AA must have paid for some product placement. But what the heck plane is THAT?? T-tail, what looks like 4 JT3D engines on pods, a 787 or Caravelle nose. You have to see it to believe it: http://www.bestmagicshow.com/history/

I also found one of those 9/11 conspiracy websites. I won't justify its existence here, for content or journalistic integrity. On the latter concern, they refer to AA flight 77 as a 757 jumbo jet. Maybe I'll draw the line there... just silly.

I presume it would be 767s or something of similar size. Because 1000 divided by 4 is 250 PAX per plane, its a pretty empty looking jumbo (For a charter), thats if they had any to start with  Wink

When someone like Oprah charters a/c like this for these special trips, does she also pay for them to cater the aircraft so her loyal employees & their familes will be fed some decent food while inflight (over 9 hours?)?

AA has always been a big contributor to the OWS. I have seen al guests flying in and out of ORD travelling with AA (Since they don't serve AMS, I guess that's why Oprah has never visited AMS, ?!).

So I guess AA is very happy to transport Oprah's crew.....This is like sponsoring Oprah. Besides, we all know Oprah never payed for the cars she gave away...

And put them into a higher tax bracket, where the overall impact was not just paying the tax on the car, but paying a higher tax rate on all of their income. The free cars were very expensive for some people, when if they had instead leased these same cars over time, they ultimately would have cost the same, but the cost would have been spread out over 4-5 years! Of course the difference is that after 5 years, they still own the car from Oprah, but wouldn't own the leased car.
