Hainan Applies For PEK-SEA

Thu Aug 02, 2007 12:29 pm

Couldn't find the English version... http://www.caac.gov.cn/C1/200708/t20070801_7039.html

Hainan Airlines applies for daily PEK-SEA with A330, starting on Jun 8, 2008.

That's interesting. I hope it happens. I was almost sure that Hainan would have applied for YVR over SEA. That would be two unique airlines in Seattle possible in coming years...Vladavia being the other.

I seriously doubt you will see any other Chinese Airline starting Vancouver service until the Approved Destination Status of China to Canada is recognised. The US isn't as critical as they have such a much larger market. Even without ADS there is enough potential to go for it.

China Southern was, allegedly, in final preparation to launch service to Canada this year but have held off until at least 2008. The delay in Canada obtaining the ADS was partially to blame.

Finally a Chinese carrier decides to start new service to a new US destination.

I take it they are using an A332. The will be NW's first real competition from SEA-PEK even though NW's flight goes via NRT (and actually starts in DTW). But you know what I mean. Wonder if this will become an 787 when CAAC takes delivery of their liners.

Good to hear. BTW, when did Hainan get A330s, I thought they only had 767-300s?

Vladavia? What's the story on them? Route? Equipment? Start date?

Thanks! Big grin

Even with the ADS issue, YVR was still in a better position to get service from Chinese carriers than SEA due to the dominance of AS at SEA. SEA however is still one of the larger China O&D markets (BOS being the other) without any direct service.

They don't have any 330 at the moment.

At the same time, HU also applied for Beijing - Moscow with A330 starting Mar 30, 2008. So maybe by that time, they will have some A330s. Anyone cares to look up 330 delivery time line?

Actually to me, that makes SEA seem even more appealing. What airline would a Chinese airline rather be competing with, AS or AC? AS can only provide feed to and from other carriers (none of which fly PEK-SEA nonstop), whereas at YVR, you're DIRECTLY competing with 2 daily AC nonstops, which feed from all over Canada and the US, and a daily CA flight on the route as well.

I think you're right - a Chinese carrier saw an opportunity that others have ignored due to more pressing needs. Yes there's YVR near by, but SEA is a much-larger metro area and can certainly warrant non-stop service on its own.

The only risk I see here is that Hainan doesn't have a US code-share partner. They would dramatically increase their chances of success if they signed a marketing agreement with AS or another US carrier.

Hainan Airlines, the country's fourth largest carrier, is seeking to run a Beijing-Seattle passenger route in June 2008.

What plane would they use to SEA?? And service to what airport?

I saw it here on another thread. They applied for scheduled service between Vladivostok (sp?) to ANC and SEA some time ago and received approval from the US DOT recently. Their plan is to start twice weekly service next Spring (April?) with TU-204's. I think it will stop at Petroplavsk (I can't spell these Russian Cities) 1X weekly and Yuzno-Sakhalinsk (1X weekly)...that's a guess. Search for Vladivostok Air here.

Well, it seems they will surely be approved as the only Chinese carrier applying for China-US nonstop. The Chinese government certainly likes more Chinese carriers to fly to US.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Hainan Airlines also state the intention of starting Boston service about a year ago?

Yes, but I think it's pretty clear with this Seattle announcement that it wasn't more than free publicity and wishful thinking. Seattle will make a perfect market for their entry into the US. Hanian likes to serve non-traditional markets (they currently fly long-haul to Brussels and Budapest). Seattle is a perfect fit among the West Coast cities.

If Hainan gets the authority to fly PEK-SEA, I wonder if they'll pull the EVA Air thing and have continuing service to BOS.

Seattle Times: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm....html

""We have had a few initial conversations with Hainan Airlines and look forward to the possibility of working with them to expand the benefits of the proposed Beijing-Seattle flights," said Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Amanda Tobin Bielawski."

That would help HU to fill the 330.

"Based on China's southern Hainan Island, the airline is backed by George Soros, its largest investor. The airline plans to expand internationally under the name Grand China Air, move its main operations to Beijing and list shares overseas.

"

It would be good if it could. Don't expect CA just to sit there and be quiet. HU will know who's the boss at PEK. After all, they are all government owned airlines. As the old Chinese saying goes: you can't have 2 tigers in the same mountain.

CA flies to YVR with 763 equipment. What makes you think they apply for authority to fly to SEA??? The only thing I could see is that CA would increase their capacity at YVR with an A340 or 744.

Maybe NW will consider flying to mainland China from SEA with A330 equipment, if HU officially announces service. In any case, if this officially happens, it will be big news here.

Like I said earlier in the thread, that'll make two new international carriers serving the Asian market. Vladivostok Air being the other.

Does China Eastern still have authority to fly to SEA, since they left quite a while ago???
