Where Was There A USair Base In Upstate New York?

Thu Aug 02, 2007 12:45 pm

I can remember back about fifteen or twenty years ago, I use to pass through a town somewhere in Upstate New York when out on road trips with the family. Anyway, there was a moderate sized airfield there, and at the time USair had some kind of operation going on here. For some reason I think I remember it being some sort of maintenance base for USair? I just remember it wasn't a passenger operation. I would have only been around 10 years old at the time, so my memories of this place are somewhat vague. Does anybody know where I'm refering to, and which upstate city/town this was located in? I can't find anything on the web or in a subsequent search of the archives on here.

Thanks,

There was a carrier, Empire Airlines, based in Utica/Rome NY with a large F-28 fleet. They had sizeable operations at Syracuse, Albany and Binghampton NY. They were acquired by Piedmont sometime in the late 80's. US Air then gobbled them up. If I recall correctly, US Air continue a good deals of these operations after the acquisition and that is what you possibly saw at one of these airports. My guess is that Empire had a hangar at Utica/Rome and it may have adopted a US Air sign at that time..

USAir always has a huge presence in the Pennsylvania/New York area, wouldn't surprise me if more then one or two cities had large USAir facilities.

I think it was Mohawk in Utica and Empire was in Syracuse. In any case, both ended up part of USAir eventually.

Given the amount of unused concourse space in SYR, I'd say there was a much larger presence there at one time. I know there was also a res office as well.....

Yes, Piedmont had a hub at SYR which came from the acquisition of Empire. USAir picked up the SYR hub from Piedmont (along with CLT, BWI, and DAY). I don't know the timeline for US cutting back and closing the SYR hub, though.

UsAir operated the former Mohawk hangar in UCA until sometime in the late 80's. I believe they did F28 work there. This facility might have come with the Piedmont merger. As others have stated both Piedmont and later US had a small mini hub operation in SYR.

Empire Airlines started as a local service carrier in the 70's with props, based, as noted, at UCA. After deregulation they acquired F-28's and gradually built a hub at SYR using those and Fairchild Metroliners. Piedmont bought Empire and merged Empire into themselves in May 1986. USAir bought Piedmont in 1987 and integrated Piedmont into themselves in August 1989. The tear-down of the SYR hub happened in the early 1990's. They probably waited out the expiration of the consent decree with the New York attorney general's office regarding keeping a certain level of air service in Upstate NY after the merger (Atty General Abrams had threatened to sue US/ PI to stop the merger on antitrust grounds).

Syracuse Hancock's main terminal was built in 1961. It had two one-level concourses that by the early 80's were about eight gates apiece. In the late 70's the southern concourse had a second-floor addition built. Empire shared that concourse with American, People Express, Eastern, and Republic. A second-floor addition to the northern concourse was opened in summer 1985 (I visited it when it was open but carpet was still being laid down), to which American and People Express moved. In late '86 or early '87 an extension of about eight gates was added to the south concourse, which Piedmont used. So from summer 1985, Empire/Piedmont had all but the two RC and EA gates of the south concourse, and the extension after it was opened. Since USAir gutted the hub in the early 90's the south concourse has been very underused.

From Piedmont's November 1, 1986 schedule:

Syracuse, New York: 66 weekday departures
3 737's, 51 F-28's, 12 commuter prop flights.

Albany 3x commuter
Baltimore 5x (1x 732 2x F28 2x 733)
Binghamton 2x commuter
Boston 4x F28
Buffalo 4x F28
Burlington 2x F28
Cleveland 2x F28
Elmira 3x F28
Hartford 3x F28
Ithaca 3x F28
Islip 2x F28
Montreal 4x F28
Newark 3x F28
LaGuardia 4x F28
JFK 4x F28
Ogdensburg 1x commuter
Ottawa 3x F28
Rochester 5x (3x F28, 2x commuter)
Utica 3x F28
Washington National 3x F28
Watertown 3x commuter
Scraton-Wilkes Barre 1x commuter

3 75-seat jets daily on ITH-SYR, to SYR as a hub! A very different time.

Hope this all helps.

Jim

15 years ago US Airways also had a maintenance base at BUF airport. They used to use the old AA hangar, which is now gone to make space for BUF's terminal which was finished in 1997. BUF competed with Tampa Bay for a new US Airways maintenance hangar, and in the end it wasn't much of a competition.

There was, until not too long ago, a SAC base at Plattsburgh, NY, which is now being operated as a commercial airport but I cannot remember a USair presence. Western NY, closer to Buffalo, you also have a former military base that is now doing commercial maintenance work.

Something else you'll no longer find is the UCA airport--it closed a couple of months back. All ops moved to RME just up the road...  Wink

Actually it is in CNY close to SYR. The former Griffiss Air Base is now RME, the replacement fro UCA. Empire Aero operates a repair facility there.

The good old days at ITH.

When Empire Airlines was all jet I believe ITH had 7 daily flights. I believe the nonstop flights went to BGM, SYR, JFK, and LGA.

think it was Mohawk in Utica

Both versions of Mohawk operated out of UCA. The second version had it's base there.
