Airline Commercials...Where'd They Go?

Thu Aug 02, 2007 2:08 pm

I always enjoyed airline commercials on TV. No matter if they were serious, funny, or both, I loved them all. Here in the USA the most recent commercials I can remember seeing are by AA with the slogan "we know why you fly" and further back the UA commercials with the animated people and the Rhapsody in Blue piano piece. I also remember BA having commercials here and vividly remember the one of the guy that goes to bed in the middle of New York saying "good night New York" and waking up in the middle of Piccadilly Circus and saying "good morning London". I loved this commercial!

Anyways, whatever happened to the commercials here in American TV? Is it the same in other parts of the world? What airlines have commercials on TV right now? My theory is that thanks to more Internet access, and travel web sites doing so much of the airlines sales, they stopped paying so much on advertising. I still see them in travel magazines and they only make me wonder...

I would like to see more foreign airlines advertising here in the USA and I can only think of BA doing this in my memory. What other airline has advertised here? I know its a lot of questions but they just keep coming as I write this.

As a conclusion, I'm sharing with you guys a funny commercial I found a while back:

Cheers!

Last airline commercials I saw over here are the bmi ones You can see them on their website, http://www.flybmi.com I think they're still on there. Looks like they were filmed in the US/Canada somewhere.

They still exist in key markets and when an airline want to open up service. But mostly, due to websites that show you "all" the options for a route, you don't need them as much as an airline.

Now, WN and others who only sell through their own website need to remind you to check there, so that's an added expense for WN at this point.

WN had some commercials on in Detroit a couple of years ago. They werenrather stupid, in my opinion. They didn't show you anything thatnrelated to flying. On was a picture of a sink with running water. Thennit stated the new low price to BWI.

I heard an NW commercial on the radio just recently.

With 90% load factors US carrier do not need to advertise to the general public right now. But they are are still chasing higher revenue business passengers. You probably will see more ads soon tauting the new lay flat seats that carrier such as AA, DL and UA are adding. But these ad will probably be targeted at business focused media such as the CNBC and the Wall Streeet Journal.

I have seen BA, BD, EY and AA adverts in the UK recently but almost always on satelite/cable channels rather than terestrial. I quite liked the EY advert actually...

Typically, when a product becomes commoditized, advertising is pointless. Not saying that is why you're not seeing any TV adverts, but the airline industry here in the U.S. is pretty darn close to being nothing more than a commodity.

WN seems to advertise pretty heavily during the NFL broadcasts ('You are now free to move about the country'). Maybe they'll be back next month.

Westjet seems to come out in 'spurts' with television ads. Usually done with a humorous twist, as befits the airline perfectly. Can't seem to track any down right now online though.

Etihad seems to be the only airline advertising in the Toronto market right now. At the risk of being called sexist, they seem to have some beautiful F/As.  bigthumbsup

Very true. Good point. Airlines advertise premium product in newspaper arts/travel/weekend sections and magazines targeted toward those with disposable incomes and who make their travel choices based on product, not price (entirely).

The other marketing is to frequent flyers, trying to win repeat business.

But just advertising to the masses to increase market share is not as big a deal anymore. Everybody is at 85% or higher LF, and an internet search for a flight from X to Y turns up all players anyway, except WN and a couple others. It's these LCCs that need to advertise more, and they do...

International is a whole different animal. tagline stolen from ads you've likely not seen for F9...  Wink

I currently live in Kansas City and they often are showing YX commercials here. Haven't seen one in a few months but they used to be on pretty frequently.

With hundreds of cable channels plus the Internet, I think airline advertising on television is now generally too expensive to reach the desired target audience. It was different when there were just 3 or 4 networks. In Europe about the only airline advertising you see on TV is on the major cable news/information channels like CNN International, and it's not that frequent there.

For products/services where 90% of purchasing decisions are based on who has the lowest price, and everybody can now easily compare prices on the Internet, spending millions of $$ on major TV advertising campaigns isn't the best use of limited marketing budgets.

And if you're promoting your premium products where price isn't as much of a factor (e.g. improved business class seating etc.) it's probably best to advertise in the major business newspapers and magazines where you can include more detailed information about the product. You can't say much in a 30 second TV ad.

Because they have more money to burn and no one to answer to. Most other airlines care about the bottom line more than the IMAGE.

Qatar Airways is the same in GVA currently. They are spending a lot of money on outdoor advertising (billboards etc.) promoting their new GVA-DOH and GVA-EWR routes. But their CEO has stated in interviews that QR has no plans to become profitable for the next several years. Most airlines don't have that luxury.

Thai currently has TV adverts running in the UK.

I've seen a few BMi ones recently too.  Smile
