747's From LAX To JFK

Fri Aug 03, 2007 10:40 am

Is Qantas the only airline that flies the 744 from LAX to JFK and vv?

I doubt one could buy tickets on it though? Or can you (purely on this sector?)

Also, are there any other international airlines that fly 744's from East coast to West coast US cities?

thanks!!!

Last year I was routed LAX-JFK-LHR with QF, then AA... Of course I was traveling with a relative employed by Qantas based in Sydney which allowed us on the LAX-JFK.. The service reminded me of what travelling in the US used to be like. A 747 on a Trans-Con, Free Hot Meal, Free Alcoholic Beverages, and Free Video/Audio.. Did I mention Customer Service?

I didn't know HP flew their 747's from LAS and PHX to JFK. I thought it was strictly LAS and PHX to HNL and then on to Japan. I learned something new.

I miss flying UA 747's between EWR/JFK and SFO/LAX. UA flew 747's and DC-10's on the transcon flights during much of the 70's and 80's. I was a monthly regular after my parents split up and I had to use employee/dependent passes to visit the parent living on the opposite coast from where I was living. I mostly flew on UA 35 EWR-SFO (747) which left EWR @ 10am and UA 34 SFO-EWR (DC-10/747) which left SFO @ 2pm. I also flew on UA 22 SFO-JFK (747) -which left SFO @ 8am and UA 29 (747) which left JFK @ 6pm quite a bit around 1979/1980. Back then UA offered Ocean to Ocean service on the transcons. Dinner in coach often included baby shrimp cocktail as an appetizer and steak and shrimp as a dinner option.

I remember flying Tower Air JFK-SJU back in '99, my first experience in a 747 ( a 742 if memory serves me right). The next four years I would the same route about 10 times on B6. I love Airbus and their A320, but there's something about flying in a heavy...

More recently, though, I flew LAX-Dulles on a UA 772. I've learned since that UA sometimes flies the 772s LAX-DEN as well (for positioning I believe), and DL flies 772 LAX-ATL. Ok, the 772 is substantially smaller than a 747, but it's basically the same concept (one of the largest planes in the fleet doing domestic routes).

Ok, maybe the "dinner" service has been downgraded a bit (hint: sarcasm!).

The date of this post is ironic to me - today, August 2, 2007, is the twenty year anniversary of my first 747 flight, TWA flight #840 LAX-JFK.

I was 21, and other than a short hop from BFL to SBA and back on United (737-200 and 727-100), it was my first major plane trip since I was eight.

The flight was selected specifically because it was a 747.

At that time, the only two airlines flying LAX to JFK with 747's were TWA and Pan Am. If the flip of the coin had been different, it would have been a Pan Am 747 we flew.

My travel agent (and very dear friend) would not let us return on TWA or Pan Am from JFK due to the fact that the westbound flights were always incoming from Europe and could be subject to horrendous delays. We instead returned on United from Newark on a DC-10.

On a side (and very somber) note, in 1996 I started noting the registration of every plane I fly on. I will always wonder if I flew on N93119 and/or N1819U on that uneventful trip.

Well, if you want to fly a 747 from the west coast to the east coast just hop on up to Vancouver and catch Cathay's CX888. It flies the route to JFK daily.

What was the last LAX/SFO-JFK 747? Tower Air? Did anyone ever operate a 744 on those routes, other than an international tag-on flight?

One is not allowed to fly from just JFK-LAX or LAX-JFK on QF flights. Any domestic carrier is okay.

Does QF have route authority to fly other routes within the US (for international pax only)? Such as, LAX-DFW, if they chose to do so, in addition to the existing LAX-JFK?

How about a nice little 744 ride from SFO--YVR on QF? That's an international flight so you can actually buy that ticket, as far as I know...

It's too much capacity within the US. You can't get fares up with that kind of capacity in the market.

Yes.

But the CASM would be significantly reduced, which means greater profit potential at lower fares. Further, given the number of flights in the market, capacity is already there.

Yes you can, though I am surprised AC hasn't started raising a stink because of the issues with their introduction of LAX-SYD service.

but the RASM falls faster than the CASM. If there was a limitless decrease in CASM without a loss of RASM, you'd see big airplanes on every route.

Just look at how both DL and B6 are doing at JFK since both have pulled back from their mutually destructive capacity growth.

Yes QF has had local traffic rights SFO-YVR since they started service to YVR in the 1950s, although in recent years it's only been a seasonal service (June-August...the last flight is August 12) and then for about 6 weeks during the Christmas period (December 16-January 27), 3 times a week. In the 1980s they also operated YVR-HNL with a 747 about twice a week.

Canadian carriers have also had 5th freedom local traffic rights HNL-SYD (and NAN-SYD) since 1949.

CI also operates a 747-400 JFK-ANC-TPE 4 times a week, but as with all foreign carriers they can't carry local traffic on the domestic sector JFK-ANC. ANC is mainly a fuel stop although they do sell ANC-TPE,. If not mistaken that's the only current transpacific passenger service from ANC now.

Has UA stoped flying SFO-ORD with the 744 or was those flights just to move the 744s between the airports??

I fondly remember flying on a UA 747-238 (ex-Qantas) from ORD-SFO back in '98. It had the old style seats, the cheesy wall colorings, but was comfy and impressive nonetheless...

Every once in a while UA will operate an overnight SFO/LAX-ORD flight with a 744, usually during the summer peak season. As you suspect this is part of aircraft repositioning, probably one of the Australia planes.

You are correct.
Last year, I was lucky enough to get four domestic United 747 flights between ORD-SFO and ORD-LAX.
In summer 2005, I was able to catch one of the United 747 flights SFO-DEN.
Not sure if United sends 747s between JFK and other domestic cities. You can occasionally get a United 747 between IAD-SFO and IAD-LAX. United uses 747s on domestic routes between hub cities.

I do not know if this is specific to the Southwest non-rev travel agreement with Qantas or not, but Southwest's agreement with Qantas states the following

* Travel on QF subsidiart/code share carriers is not permitted. LAX-NYC and LAX-CHI travel is only permitted if it is used in conjunction with a connecting international QF route.
