Bmi Quitting Durham Tees Valley Rumour

Fri Aug 03, 2007 10:25 pm

This rumour seems to do the rounds every few months, but this time seems to come from a fairly credible source.

bmi are apparently set to end their Durham Tees Valley (Teesside) to London Heathrow route from the end of Winter 2007/8 timetable.

The source is an employee at Aviance, their handlers at MME.

This will be a shame. It is bmi's oldest route. But with their long haul expansion at LHR they seem to need the slots.

Does anyone think that Ryanair or FlyGlobespan would start a London route from MME with bmi gone? The rule was that no other airline was allowed to start a jet route to London whilst bmi operated here.

Hi Mattfalcus,

Seems to be very strange the information of this employee... maybe BD will reduce flights but I have many doubts about this information when all schedules are published until May 2008 in Amadeus...

Wait and see...

I thought that was a decent route for BD. As stated above, perhaps they are just going to reduce frequency and that slots are needed for other routes, such as the US?

I worked for BMI many years ago at MME and in those days we had 5 flights a day to LHR
I think they are already down to 3 a day,(correct me if I'm wrong) so they cant really reduce much further
AAAh those were the days, Tees-side  Smile

This rumor has been going for a while as stated, I think the route could well go if BMI need more slots for Transatlantic routes.

If flew this route 2 weeks ago on the 06:30 LHR departure, just 21 of us on the E145..............

Forgot to add, flew back to LHR from Leeds later that afternoon, had about 30 people on our A320.

I can't say if these are typical numbers, intresting though.

I was wondering when BMI would start cutting their domestic routes. It was announced a while back that they would be reviewing all short haul/Domestic operations.

Its not long until BA are getting 51 slots of bmi as part of the BMed deal. When this happens, sadly I think MME could get axed

Quoting Mattfalcus (Thread starter):

No. FR have recently axed STN-BLK, and there has been a trend recently for domestic frequencies to be cut (Easyjet being a very good example this winter). Plus FR have a major disagreement with STN at the moment, so something would have to be axed at STN to allow STN-MME, or something at LTN axed to allow LTN-MME

As for GSM, all their domestic routes (STN-GLA/EDI, EDI-BOH), except from MME-JER, have failed

Yes BMI are going to have to start cutting back on some routes to accomadate the former BMED services once BA take those slots in late 2008 / 2009 and also so they can start moving slots around for the planned transatlantic flights.
