Why The Lack Of Interactive Moving Maps On US Domestic Service?

Hi..

I am wondering why US domestic airlines never show the "interactive moving map" during flight ??

There are a couple of airlines that show Interactive Moving Maps on their AVOD systems. A couple that come to mind are Continental and JetBlue.

True... don't some (I'm thinking NW ?) aircraft have screens but nothing played on them on US domestic flights? Wouldn't it be quite easy to display an airshow-like thing? Many European airlines have screens but no video programming and that's what they do...

Because the system isn't installed?

Most "domestic" configured planes in the USA, if they had IFE, just had a simple system with one or two tape players and various displays (be they projectors, CRTs or LCDs) throughout the cabin to show canned content. Some planes also had a link to the VHF antenna to pick up television stations (watched a few Cowboys v. Giants football games on AA DC10s as a kid). But none of those systems were linked to the tracking system.

F9 has free moving map as one of their channels in all airbus seat backs.

Most us domestic aircraft have no IFE or limited IFE to DVD/DAT players to show recorded programming only and the domestic carriers do not want to spend 100,000 USD per aircraft on installing airshow and upgrading their IFE.

Delta has it on their reconfigured 757s.

All of Delta's international aircraft (767-300ER, 767-400ER, and 777-200ER) feature either Airshow or Panasonic's equivalent, iXPLOR. Delta's Transcon 757s also feature iXPLOR. The only other domestic aircraft in Delta's fleet with a moving map program are the 737-800s and domestic 767-400ERs, however, on most of my flights on Delta's 737-800s, the Airshow feature was turned off. The normal 757s and domestic 767-300s do not feature a moving map program. Delta's MD-11s did feature Airshow, as well as the L-1011-500s after their IFE overhaul. The L-1011-1s did not get Airshow installed during their IFE overhaul, I am not sure about the L-1011-250s. The 767-200s did not feature a moving map program.

When the domestic 767-300s and 28 of the 737-800s get the new Transcon IFE, they will likely feature the iXPLOR program included with the system.

My guess is that there are also probably licensing costs to show the airshow thing too...

It seems to be now, but in the past, before the digital age, it was an extra cost option. Considering the in flight video overtakes the system on non-PTV based setups, the value of having it on flights of 6 or less hours is not there, because between the movie(s) and the inflight magazine and the tv show episodes, there's very little dead air time.

On the long range planes, after the 2 movies and between them, there was usually a lot of free time with nothing to show, so it made sense to show the progress of the flight so that the pax weren't constantly harassing the F/As about it...  Wink

their is a one time cost to install the system, and then occasional fees for map upgrades, etc.

I'm pretty certain I once flew a Delta L1011 with the Airshow. I know it wasn't a -500 so if it wasn't a -1 either, that leaves a -250. Can anyone else confirm?

The airshow may have been turned off, all the A330's have airshow on the PTV's.

Because it does have to interact with the plane's systems, if it malfunctions, there's not much they can do. And I doubt it's a high priority to fix it. They won't take a jet out of circulation if the Airshow doesn't work, but will likely try to fix it if there's time when there's a longer turn, and if not, then have to wait for an A check or similar.

On DL aircraft without the PTVs, they'll usually show a moving map in between segments and shows during the IFE. In 2004, I remember the moving map on a 737-800 ATL-CVG. They also had it on the 767-400 to HNL in 2005.

I guess you need more competition over there!  Smile

But they can be a bit zany. A couple of years back I flew to Greece by Gulf. Syd to Sing was sort of OK apart from sound not working. From Sing to the Gulf according to the display, we more or less flew backward, or at least within about 10 degrees of straight backward - must have been a cross wind as well!!

Happily, coming back we did manage to fly forwards - perhaps it helped being slightly downhill.

I've seen the airshow on playing on the overhead screens on CO between when I was flying SEA-IAH in 2005, but it only played immediately after take off and for about 20 minutes prior to arrival.

I personally find it relaxing to stare out window and make my own airshow..rain snow sleet or hail, clouds or no clouds..its uaully a beautiful site. Of course at night it makes it that more interesting to figure out where you are. But I do love airshow (especially over the pond) and Ch9 on United. AA lacks here in many ways.

AA's T7s have Airshow and the newly made over 763s have iXPLOR. When the 757s get their new interiors, they'll have iXPLOR too. At some point the 762s will likely get it as well, as they'll receive the same video system from Panasonic which includes iXPLOR. Maybe someday you'll see it on the 738s (if they decide to standardize IFE and eliminate tapes).

The one thing I don't like about iXPLOR, and this may have more to do with AA than Panasonic, is the system is not hooked up to the flight plan or FMS. When you enter the flying time, the system counts down from takeoff and that's it. It doesn't update itself and take into account shortcuts, reroutes or holds, so the "time remaining" isn't always accurate. The T7's Airshow have real time data and are updated throughout the flight.

Delta does use it as well on shorter 757 and 737 hops...I've been on quite a few RDU-ATL and GSO-ATL flights on 737/757 equipment and they just showed AirShow the entire flight.

That's because both of these planes have new systems from the digital age. The 738s are obviously the newest narrowbodies at DL, and the 757s have newer IFE systems.

I have flown on Delta's 757s many times, and I have never seen a moving map program on Delta's non-Transcon 757s, nor on the domestic 767-300s.
