Planes On The Road?!

Tue Aug 07, 2007 8:23 pm

I saw this on myaviation.net, and it left me puzzled. What are these planes doing on the road? There is a mention of a show in the caption, but that still doesn't expain why they are 'driving' on the road as if they were cars!

Judging by the caption, it seems the aircraft was at an off-airport location.

It was probably either cheaper or more convenient to move the aircraft under its own power between the show location and the airport rather than use ground transportation (i.e. a truck).

This also occured when the UA 727 was moved into the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

Probably similar to the Parade of Planes that we have here in Palm Springs for the AOPA Expo...

It's a parade of sorts.

Fighter planes use roads all the time in Sweden.  Wink

If you look on the left edge of the picture, you can see many more planes coming. I think this is the AOPA Expo from 2004, the location changes every year.

It was in Long Beach in 2004.

FLL was 2001.

The Fort Lauderdale festivities will actually begin on November 7 at 10 a.m., with the "Parade of Planes."

Some 80 aircraft will taxi from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to the convention center. The parade, which will last about 90 minutes and is the largest in AOPA history, will follow U.S. Route 1 to SE 17th St. and then into the static display area immediately adjacent to the convention center. Parade watchers are welcome to attend a barbecue, sponsored by the AOPA Aircraft Financing Program, at the end of the Parade of Planes.

First of all, you can probably only do this kind of cool stuff in the US. Our European roads and streets are simply too narrow even for small jets.

Secondly, what do you thing about the pedestrian in the picture? A few steps from where he is, and he'd be jetblasted, resulting in serious injury or death. From what we can see, there is no perimeter fence or anything. And he doesn't look like a marshall without a uniform. Surely that can't be good?

Judging by the outfit, I'm guessing he's with the plane. I've met plenty of Cessna salesmen, and that looks like their "uniform".

You've never been behind a citation right as it taxis out, have you?

The jet blast isn't very strong. Just for info, I have been about 50 meters behind a 737-300 at take off power. It feels like a warm storm, but if you know it is coming and you brace yourself yxou wouldn't been blown over.

When I read the title of this thread I thought you were referring to the new Turkish Airlines commercial. Just saw it on BBC World, where an A330 is taxiing through the streets of various cities...
