Mexico To Brazil: More Airlines,... When?

Wed Aug 08, 2007 1:37 am

Dear friends, will be needing to fly down to Rio sometime this coming October, part business part leisure, and I have been eagerly awaiting for Ocean Air to announce commencement of their projected service between Mexico City and Sao Paulo. Have been continuously checking, both Ocean Air and GOL-Varig´s webistes, in search for info or news about their future Mexican plans, but looks like it´s all very quiet down there on the Brazilian front. Felipe, Richard, Brazilian friends, anything from your side ???

I understand there might be some slight changes in plans taking place at the airlines , especially now that GRU is somehow temporarily, i hope, closed to new or additional international service, but could this mean, in the case of Mexico, that the opening of new routes between the two countries, is to be rerouted to Rio instead of Sao Paulo ? Could it also mean the indefinite deferral in the launch of new ops to and from Brazil ? What´s the story folks ?

You see, at this time Aeromexico is pretty much the only non stop option between the two countries, and fares for October stand at a little over USD 1350 for a PVR-MEX-GRU v v , inclusive of taxes. Kind of pricey, ain´t it ? I was hoping that Ocean Air would be coming up with a nice introductory deal as a promo of their new service, but so far, nothing yet....  frown

I guess will now have to go to Avianca and COPA in search for some kind of hidden bargain, if any. Anyone out there has in mind a cheaper way that could get me to Rio before carnival time in 2008 ???.....  wink

Best regards

When? I was wondering the same. My brother in law will probably fly to Brazil by November and he asked my opinion about the flights. He told me that his current employer sends other co-workers by AM in Clase Premier with fares of 7,500 USD. Seems AM has the higher fares...

I read here in a.net that the flight would be started by August 15th, but OceanAir wet leased its only 763 to TAAG and the second 763 is yet to be delivered. I think the flight will be launched later on, maybe by October? Hopefully, with the entrance of OceanAir or Varig, you can get lower prices.

Perhaps AM will be starting flights to Rio. According to AM's official appointed to Brazil:

Quote:

Even Mexicana is planning to lease a 3rd 763 for a new destination in Southamerica. I think that destination is in Brazil.

I understand that the 763 is now back in Brasil, even doing some domestic flights, after the short lease to TAAG (who now have a SAA 747). MEX is supposed to be OceanAir's first international destination, and I heard that the starting date would be sometime in September. So XA744, I would hold on a few days if I were you!
It is difficult to believe the rumours, as the false starts don't inspire much confidence, but surely it is time that OceanAir got that 767 doing what they were obtained for.

Are you sure? I saw very recently MEX-GRU-VIX-GRU-MEX flights for October with AM and JJ (one single ticket) for just a tad over U.S.$1,000, with all charges and taxes included. I would think you can find something better than what you saw!
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Well, would be great to ride MX all the way down to RIO, but I guess, before that could happen, they will have to come out of the very big trouble they are into with their cabin crew union. What a mess at Mexicana !!! It is a real shame the airline has been loosing momentum and with it so many wonderful opportunities out there for long haul expansion. Ghost, any comments from your side ???

Xifo, thanks for having taken the time to look for a better deal, but sorry to say, I don´t like AA nor MIA. I also rather have my little dollars go to a LatAm carrier, instead. Apologies to all AA and MIA lovers !!!

Well, Eduardo, this is what the lousy and unfriendly website of Aeromexico is throwing at me. I´m now trying Exdpedia to talk to me, but it looks like their server is experiencing some trouble at this time.

Recent rumors say MX is in search of a 3rd widebody frame. Most probably its going to be its 3rd B767. Where will it be deployed? Latam... either Brazil or Chile. As they're not interested in Europe. And they want Asia, China was on their plan, at least, under Romano's leadership from first hand, i asked him and he told me China was in their whishlist of future destination. I don't think they'll get to Rio by Oct 07. But you might have high chances of going down to the carnaval with MX by 2008.

I'm still dreaming of MX getting B787/777s or A332/A340s and landing at EZE, SCL, GRU and Asia in those beauties.

Thomaz, great news !!! Thank you for posting the detailed info.

Looks like I am having problems with Ocean Air´s website, as I can´t manage to go through, book a flight and get a quotation for any date after August 31. Will give it a rest and try again tomorrow.

Just hope Ocean Air throws in some nice and sweet deals on their new Mexico service !!!....  pray

They just announce in Brazil to begin, a 15% commission for travel agents (AM pays 6%), fares at the same level.

In fact the MEX-GRU leg is very interesting as it allows an early morning arrival.

Yes, they decided not to venture now only 2x weekly at TLC, costs should be high. May be in the near future, at the time the route become profitable they should increase the flights and include TLC, their only alternative.

Thanks for the info, Felipe. I don´t know what about you fellas, but in spite of the great demand existing for seats between Brazil and Mexico v v, still think that Ocean Air should come up with some nice promo on their website, even for a very limited time.

BTW, what are the amenities to be offered by Ocean Air on board their 763s ?

That is a huge incentive for travel agents to book passengers on OceanAir!

I think that they have yet to put the flight on amadeus and the like. It looks as if the flights are only being loaded onto OceanAir's website, as they only seem available for the first few days at the moment, with a promotional fare of about R 800 BRLs one way plus taxes, normal fare more like 930 BRLs, so between USD 1000 and 1150.

I guess that they will want to see how the market responds, but they might yet have to do more promotions if the seats don't get filled fast.

Prices are a little high... i believe they should reduce the fares to a USD 800 level very shortly. USD 1,000 for a new flight with first flight in just one week is an invitation for a loss. IMO they should announce the flight at least 2 months before the first flight and prepare a "road show" to introduce the route on both markets.

Costs at TLC to land and fly out are really low compared to MEX and there are a lot of several incentives from the local government and airport to operate at this airport for new carriers, issue here, is that cost would increase to staff more people at TLC plus those at MEX. More over, perhaps, OceanAir will use AV's counters and some of its staff!!!

FelipeGIG,

Any news with RG? I read from you, RG should reinstate its flight before October 31st, 2007, otherwise, rights will be lost!!! If RG looses the rights what could we possibly see on the route happening? Surely OceanAir increasing to 7X or even more... plus what about BRA? Any chances of them getting some frequencies???

RG should begin the flights in the middle of October per the last info i get. Sales would begin a month in advance. If they can't fly up to October 31st, i'm sure O6 will request at least 2 slots at MEX to fly daily.

I can't see BRA flying to MEX because of lack of equipment, they already get several frequencies to LIS, MAD and MXP which i doubt they could run on time.
