Interesting, two comments:

Note that UA had a DC8 and a DC10 flying redeye services almost wing-to-wing.....thats a lot of seats.

And, I honestly never knew that PA, at any time, flew between SFO and ORD, did that flight provide connection to other flights in either ORD or SFO?

That one was used to connect with PA's vast Pacific operation out of SFO.

Thus, this is 1985, all makes sense........thanks, I appreciate it. The PA flight really surprised me but, by 1985, PA was probably trying to create some online domestic feed for its Asian network.

that DC-8 is really a D8S isnt it...I would think that the short bodied DC-8s were gone by 1985.

Short bodies were gone by the early 1980s for UA. The one noted above was a DC-8-71.

It's not that surprising, because in 1985, DTW was just a focus city for NW. It didn't become a full hub for NW until after the Republic merger the next year. Most passengers going from Detroit to Asia took Republic to California, then Pan Am or JAL to NRT. I'm sure Pan Am added the DTW-ORD tag to enable passengers flying from Detroit to Asia to take PA all the way.

I am surprised though that PA, with all their widebodies, did not use a larger aircraft on the route. But I guess the demand must have been light enough for the 727 to do the trick.

TWA until they stopped their ORD flying west in 1982(?). I was booked DCA-ORD-SFO circa winter of 81/82 shortly before they stopped the flights, but instead took a voluntary bump to route DCA-STL-SFO for the cash and upgrade to 707 First out of STL before the 707s were history.
