Frontier's/Lynx's New Dash 8, Photos And Questions

Thu Aug 09, 2007 9:37 am

I got to take pictures of Lynx's first Dash 8 at BJC a few weeks ago:

I went back to BJC a few days ago to take a front-lit profile shot for a certain airline magazine. I asked about ramp access, and was granted it, but I couldn't take pictures of the Dash 8, F9's orders. According to airport ops, it was parked at BJC to keep it 'secret'.

Why would they park it in front of the terminal when it could easily go in some remote corner of DEN? Is there some connection between Lynx and BJC that I don't know about?

When will this one enter service? Anybody know anything about the delivery schedule and service plans?

Thanks!  Smile

Does the -400Q have any external carry-on holds in the belly like CRJ-700/-900?

Nope, these shots were taken on a previous visit. I was actually invited out to the plane by Lynx employees that time.

If you reread the original post, he says he took the photos above two weeks ago. It was only after he went back to get a particular shot that he was denied.

I don't think so. I got to go in the cabin on the first visit too, and don't remember seeing them. There's no DirectTV 'bump' on the fuselage either.

I'm not sure what is "secret" - the photos are all over the web and Frontier has announced the first service:

http://flyfrontier.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=press_releases&item=1398

DEN-ICT on October 1, followed by DEN-SUX and DEN-RAP on October 5.

Lynx has its AOC from the DOT but the FAA has not signed off yet - they have approved everything, but have to have a period for "interested parties to comment".

FAA approval is expected by the end of August.

I believe BJC is relatively close to Lynx's headquarters in Westminster. That might explain the convenience factor of parking it at BJC so a lot of their groups can get access to it for training.

I know Frontier has had training for their managers and supervisors out at BJC. It's a sweet airport.

When are the other 9 aircraft to be delivered? They are all supposed to be on the property before the end of 2007. I would think we would be getting some more route announcements soon. Each plane should be able to do 6 or 7 flights a day (maybe more) due to the short routes. 10 planes equals alot of flights to announce soon.

Well i think they are going to announce 10-12 more cities, but i dont know when, I would think soon. But my guesses for 4 Cities probably is:

Durango
Aspen
Sioux Falls
Bozeman

With SAF getting a lot of new traffic, I have a hunch that Lynx Q400's are going to take over for the Big Sky 1900D's.

What do you think? DEN-SAF on a Lynx Q400?

I live below the runway at BJC and man, it was some surprise to see that fly over my house! I went up to the airport to investigate! Turns out its just a more convinient place to train their pilots at instead of out in the boonies at DEN! way cool to see a commercial aircraft at BJC!!

The Q400 is my ALL-TIME favorite a/c! I've flown it on several QX (Horizon) segments in WA, OR, and ID. There's slightly more cabin noise then a jet, but not noticeably so. The legroom was great (may be just on Horizon), and it was really neat to watch the landing gear extend/retract; you don't often get to see that except with high-mount wings.

Long story short: I would take the Q400 over the CRJ2 or CRJ7 any day of the week; though it's toss-up between the Q and the CRJ9.

I REALLY REALLY hope Lynx and the Q400s come to SAF. If so, I will go out of my way to fly them as often as I can!

Do you think there is a chance they will take United's 3x daily CRJs in IDA? The flights to Denver started as two and grew to the three packed CRJs every day. I'm hopeful for some competition to drop the fares down to a reasonable price.

Thanks for the info GQ, I don't head out to BIL very often, but I visit it more than any of the other Q400 Lynx cities so maybe I'll get to see one of these planes sometime.

Yes. Closet like accessed thru a door on starboard side just behind cockpit.

Its not like the underfloor ones on the CRJ 700 and 900 though, which I think is what ERAYgrad02 asked. On the Q400 the forward hold is on the same level as the pax.

There is no space for underfloor holds in the Q400 because of the fuselage x-section. This is called 'Bilobed' and is basically round but with the bottom squashed (a bit like a 737 nacelle). This allows acceptable width at cabin level without creating a largely useless underfloor void. It also means all the access points are nice and close to the ground.

If Lynx decided to fly into EGE, I'd fly F9 almost exclusively.

Any kind of LCC presence here in the Vail Valley sure would be welcome. Now, I have to weigh the drive to DEN, cost of parking and tax on time vs. the extra $300 - $600 per ticket to fly out of an airport 20 minutes away.

Think of what F9 could do with the animal tail advertising if ASE, EGE, GUC, ZTL, et al. got service. I can only imagine Jack in goggles and parka.

With equipment. the only ground level access point is the lav. service panel. The forward and aft cargo pit doors have to be accessed with equip. you can open the aft door from ground level but you can't drop the net till standing on something. the forward pax door can be opened and accessed from ground level, but the aft door requires a specific set of stairs, both the pax on the left and service on the right.

It's a great airplane. Incredibly comfortable (much more so than the CR7), very quiet, very fast. DEN-ELP really isn't that crazy long of a route for the Q400. QX uses it on BIL-SEA, and BIL-PDX, and it's really popular.

I wonder if they have hired people to work at outstations they haven't announced yet?

Rumor (definitely not confirmed) up here is that Horizon will continue to ground handle the Lynx flights here at BIL. It's a rumor that definitely makes sense, as QX already has all the Horizon signage, the computers, the experience handling a Q400, and the experience handling flights in the F9 system.

Does QX or do you think Lynx will use both front and rear doors for passangers?

Its rumored that they are all going to be baby animals, as they are the "baby" Frontier. Don't think it will be all Lynxes though.

QX is currently using both for/aft doors for boarding and deplaning.
