Thanks for the link. Those decoy flares the Herc is deploying are very effective against the somewhat limited IR seekers used in the old Warsaw Pact shoulder launched SAM's such as the SA-9 "Strela".

I once saw a Canadian Armed Forces C-130 demonstrate a "JATO" take off here in Calgary during an airshow some 25 years ago. Now "that" was awesome.

What's the official terminology, JATO or RATO?

Also, Strella is called Grail in NATO nomenclature...I guess all Soviet SAMs starts with the letter G, e.g. SA-2 Guideline.

The official terminology is JATO ( Jet Assisted Take-Off).
