New International Service To SFO

Fri Aug 10, 2007 4:36 am

Answer me this:

So A.net has been very quite as of late about Air India and Jet Airways to SFO (specially Jet). So I am hearing from a good source that both will start in Oct 07. I can't find anything on either websites.

So is this true?

If so it appear between yesterday and Oct., SFO will receive 5 new airlines.

Virgin America
Southwest
Aer Lingus
Air India ?
Jet Airways ?

Has there been any more discussion of Oasis Hong Kong, Kingfisher, V-Australia, BMI, or Emirates entering the San Francisco market? I could have sworn someone said that TN was going to offer the A319 Business Class Config on an SFO-BOB service.

This is all great news!
I look forward to flying Virgin America to New York, hopefully before the year is out.
If Air India starts up service here, I'd love to see their 747s in the older/current livery before they all get repainted to the new cheaper looking livery.

Oasis Hong Kong is going to be starting service to OAK I believe. Still wish AI had gone to SJC, but I have to be honest that that was a pipe dream at best.

I also would love to see EK or BMI at SFO though.

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't SJC have really strict noise abatement laws and no after hour flights due to it's proximity to rich, whinny nimby's?

Its only a matter of time before some Indian carrier shows up at SFO. Jet, Air India or Sausalito's own Vijay and his Kingfisher.

I would not hold my breath however as each one seems to be good at planning for lots of routes but failing to execute.

Btw- I wonder if AI does show up if its service regularity will be any better than what they are doing at LAX, where 3-6 delays are the norm, if not straight out cancellations due continual stream of equipment problems?

Actually, I doubt the noise abatement laws or the late hour flights would be a problem if AI or anyone else decided to run 744s, 777s, or 787s into SJC. If they saw their was a profit to be made out of SJC they would probably just schedule around those times.

when BD do finally get it together , think SFO is there somewhere , but it won't happen till next year (08) - when open Sky's kicks in.. and then it will be with an A330-200 series aircraft, tho at least they will have the new ''sleeper pods'' in business class. so looking forward to them coming online. True, however a 4-5 hour delay in arrival or departure may fall between the SJC's silly 11:00PM to 6:30AM curfew which most carriers rather not deal with.

From the Indian context the rumours are:

1. 9W BOM-PVG-SFO - winter 2008/09
2. AI BLR-SFO non-stop (May 2008)
3. AI DEL/BOM-FRA-LAX/SFO (soon!)
4. IT BLR-SFO non-stop (May/June 2008)

Clearly everything is in the air.

VA and Jet Airways will start service to SFO before year end.

AerLingus? NO
Southwest: I doubt it; the reason they pulled out was that they didn't want to pay the costs of operating there.

The rest, who knows?

One thing I do know (and this is fact): The airport authority at SFO (The City) has a very aggressive sales and marketing department and they do a very effective job of attracting new players to the market. The A side of the international terminal will have its full compliment of gates soon, so there will be room for growth in 2008. I am less certain about the central terminal; I believe that Virgin America is operating out of the new terminal complex for now...a good idea, especially if they are going to provide feed to their British sister carrier.

SAS: I doubt they will add SFO, although they were talking about it for some time. Their focus is on Asia at the moment, although they could use more gateways in the US (IMHO).

As I said, the rest? Who knows...

...WN has restarted SFO for a multitude of reasons...1)better costs (I heard they are paying up to 40% less than when they were last in SFO), 2-more competition and the need for expansion/serving other airports 3) with SFO upgrading its navigation system, there are much less delays than there have been in the past....

Wow, you were really off on this one. I still enjoy reading your insights on air travel. I knew a few of the AZ ground staff at SFO. I miss seeing the "green" jackets.

VA started service yesterday. As posted on other treads, it is doubtful 9W will start service this year into SFO. I assume it is getting approval from the Chinese Gov't for rights.

As stated , Southwest starts in a few weeks and EI in October.

SFO has another two or three International carriers in the pipe line. There was a quote by a airport official stating they had five carriers lines up for new service.

EI, possible AI but the three others are a mystery???

Thai never flew schedule service into SFO. The only time a TG flew into SFO was a diversion due to 911. The bussed the passengers down to LAX.

CPH-NRT
CPH-BKK
CPH-PEK
CPH-ORD

Don't know if they have any more on order, I think they leased two 340's from AC to be used on ARN-BKK and CPH-Dubai

The long haul focus is on Asia at the moment, mainly PEK and BKK as I understand it. It's odd, SAS Group made quite a large chunk of cash last year, and hopefully they'll start pouring some of it into SAS International to allow for some more expansion. ARN-PEK, ARN-BKK and CPH-DXB are all well and good, but two of those are already served by SAS.

SFO is a very interesting place. We seem to attract lots of international carriers (especially European) but for some reason, we can't keep them here.

Iceland
Alitalia
Swiss
Aeroflot

...all gone.

So as excited as I get about them starting service, I've become used to these carriers leaving.

Also, what I don't understand. After WN pulled out of SFO, we had no major LCCs. Than out of blue, we get WN, jetBlue, and VA.

Same with flights to Central Asia. We had none, now we are getting three.

And look at flights to the South Pacific. For a long time it was just UA. Now we also have Air New Zealand, Qantas, and soon V Australia.

I just don't understand why our service works like this. From zero to a boat load.

PS - What about EK to SFO? That suddenly died out too?

I have bought a ticket for August 30 from SFO-SAN on WN. Nice to see WN return to SFO. BART has a train car painted with a Southwest ad detailing the new destinations. I only paid $98 on WN. I also have bought a ticket on Aer Lingus from SFO-DUB for Nov. 23. Nice fare for that too. Glad to see new airlines enter the Bay Area Market.

This puzzles me too. At one time, after JFK, SFO was considered a sure bet to be EK's second US gateway; now they are going to IAH and LAX. I would not be surprised to see IAD to that list before they get around to SFO. Your point about airlines that come and go is very true. Didn't TAP also fly to SFO in the past?

I wonder if such a routing could be viable. Would it be transpacific, or routed via Europe? If Jet Airways starts to SFO, I don't doubt it would be a 343, but via what city? Can it do nonstop, or via HKG? HKG could use more Indian airliners too since they have a huge East Indian population, then it could continue on to Bombay.

If it were Kingfisher, with a new A380, it could go nonstop (Transpacific polar route i imagine?). Does anyone know how SFO to India routes would be flown?

For instance, when the City of San Francisco opened a new Convention and Visitors Office in India, SFO also assigned people to attract Indian carriers.

With regard to LCC, SFO had less than ten percent of its carriers classified as LCCs. The Director of SFO made it a priority to attract LCCs to SFO. There was a recent article from WN stating that when they pulled out of SFO , their costs were twice as high as they are now. Plus ACT issues are under control. The interesting this will be in a few years when SFO will reach its pre 911 levels of 41 million paxs. Will the LCCs still stick around if they have ground delays?

I know this is probably on another thread, but we all know how efficient the search engine on here is. What is the status of the old international terminal at SFO? I know it is vacant. I've read various reports it will be refurbished or demolished and rebuilt. It seems it would be a great space for expansion, especially if Virgin is successful; or even just a realignment of existing carriers to allow for expansion. Unless I am overlooking something, I can't even find anything on the SFO website about the plans for that concourse.

I hope that Aeromexico comes to SFO!!! Aeromexico filed US DOT applications to fly to North Bay airports (OAK, SFO and SJC?) and also SCK, but so far no action from Aeromexico. Mexicana dominates the Mexico flights out of SFO, i'm watting for United to introduce more flights to Mexico (in specific, GDL)

Would AM use the Delta/Sky team counter to log in flights to Mexico at Oakland(OAK)? I have heard that AM has applied for the US dot applications for routes to Mexico. I wonder at OAK will AM fly to GDL or MEX, being that MEX is the hub for AM. Currently as of two weeks at the Oakland Airport gates 8 & 8A are being re-paved so AA has moved to gate 21 and US Airways has temporarily moved to Gate 20. AS is still in T1. Gates 20 & 21 are pretty lonely compared to hectic WN. Correct me if I am wrong.

air india service will start oct end or early nov..

it will be SFO..BLR...ATQ...with a 772LR..

plane will change in BLR...but from a marketing standpoint to make ppl feel it's one flight all the way...they will have a flight from BLR to ATQ with the same new flight number..

this was a great strategy..the market from CA to india is about 40% techies bound for BLR....30% gujrati tourists bound for either BOM or BLR and....30% sikh punjabi's who's final destination is punjab..where ATQ is..

this way the route will appeal to the majority of travellers ..across the board.

what AI found in their studies was that most ATQ bound PAX used either

SQ....SFO- TPE- SIN...ATQ..or Asiana...SFO..TPE...ATQ ..or flew thru europe to DEL and drove 8 hrs..flting with LH- BA or VS teh majority of the time..

Others used a mix of AA from ORD to DEL or CO from EWR ..or the usual European carriers to BLR ..which today is BA or LH..

i think this strategy coupled with new aircarft...taking people's stereotype fear away regarding AI safety..is going to be a real winner for AI..
