Loud Flight Decks.

Fri Aug 10, 2007 11:03 am

Was just talking to a co-worder/ex Air Canada employee today. Now as you may or may not know Air Canada operates a majority Airbus fleet. A330's, A340's, A319's, A320's A321, 767's soon the be 787. Regardless as my co-worder was saying flying jump in an Airbus is deafening. He told me how until you reach cruise you hear ringing in your ears. Now I've noticed on T/O They can be a bit noisey(narrow bodies in particular) the A321 espcially I have noticed. Anyone care to elaborate? Perhas airbus pilots?? Also anyone know of any other noisey flight decks? Obviously the 732's... or so I've been told.

I sat on the jumpseat of a 737-700 going to Greenland, and found it to be relatively quiet. Same with the 763 and 764. I've also been in the cockpit of the bizjet version of te ERJ-140, and found it be pretty noisy.

I've heard that the 747's flight deck can be comparatively noisy due to its position at the front of the upper deck "hump".

The earlier A320s had a lot of air conditioning noise. However the later A320s and the A319s have quite quiet cockpits. And the A321 cockpit is so quiet its startling!
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

The Twin Otter was the loudest thing I sat in on a regular basis. Loud even when wearing foam rubber earplugs under the David Clark headsets.

Our MD-80s are nice and quiet up front.

Best of all is the 727. Hush quiet up front

The 747 can be very loud, especially at M0.9! It was a pleasant relief to move on to the 767.......except when a window seal leaks.

That one is also pretty old too! I went up inside it at Oshkosh, she was looking pretty tired- apparently due to go to the boneyard in the next couple of years. Hope yours are a tad newer Jeremy  Smile

B737NG and B744 are the noisiest I've jumpseated in. B752, A332 and A321, the quietest.

The ERJ and CRJ are so loud you can't talk without an interphone. The ERJ is probably worse. This is due in part to the aircraft using the same windscreen that is used on the EMB-120.

Haha do they even have a jump seat in that tiny thing? I've done jump in 737NGs and found them to be quiet quiet actually.
