So This Is Why Concourse A At MIA Is Closing Down

Fri Aug 10, 2007 11:10 am

Quoting Ina Paiva Cordle, The Miami Herald:
Twelve years after it was built, the stucco walls of Miami International Airport's Concourse A are so severely cracked that they must be repaired and resealed, at an estimated cost to MIA of $700,000.

Fair use excerpt from http://www.miamiherald.com/top_stories/story/197240.html

To paraphrase the article, stucco walls cracking is a common event in Florida due to the heat and humidity, even more so at an airport because of the air traffic moving around it.

However, it is unusual that the cracks are so large and took so long to develop: "Either they would occur right away, or not at all", says Jamie Farny, program manager, masonry and special products, for the Portland Cement Association. This is probably why the warranty period was only a year long.

The work will be put up for bid on October 2nd, and is scheduled to begin sometime after November 19th. Airport spokesman Greg Chin predicts that it will be completed by May 19th, 2008.

And yes, I know that this isn't the actual reason for Concourse A's upcoming closure.
