My assumption would be the large Shuttle America/Chautauqua Airlines maintenance/crew base located in CMH
. Even though Columbus is not an official Republic maintenance or crew base, aircraft are regularly sent to Shuttle America for light maintenance checks by Republic. Given the need to cycle aircraft through CMH
, as well as the general trend of shifting mainline flying to RJs, and also USAirways mainline letting go of some of their 737 fleet and reallocating 757s to international ops, it was inevitable that a lot of CMH
flying would go RJ
. It's a shame to see, but it's the nature of the industry nowadays.
Slightly off topic, but the USAirways brand as a whole will shrink even further from CMH
come September, when the 4 daily Saab 340 flights between CMH
are terminated. I talked to a Colgan pilot yesterday concerning the change, he said that it came literally without notice, as he had just moved to Columbus. Basically, the same old reasoning was given that the route was not making money, even though it regularly went out full, especially when flights to the other hubs were severely delayed or cancelled, which happens quite often.
