US Air 710 PHL - ZRH Horrible Track Record

Sun Aug 12, 2007 12:19 am

US AIR has been flying in to Zurich for a short time now and the ontime performance is absolutely miserable. Checking flightstats.com

Historical Arrival Performance of this Route
Ontime 25%
Late 0%
Very Late 12%
Excessive 25%
Cancelled 25%
Diverted 12%

With the flight rated a .6 about as low as can be acheived.

So is US Air this bad??

Your absolutely right and I wondered when it was gonna be picked up. Anytime I've worked that flight it went on a mechanical hold or just some crazy thing happens. 706 - MUC wasn't doing well last month.

Not so much the US Airways is bad it is a combination of Weather, Philadelphia, and Mechanical Issues

PHL has been horrible this year in terms of weather and ATC. Doug stated this is one of the tops things keeping our ontime performance low. Not much you can do about it until the gov't decides to upgrade the ATC system. It's a hot topic these days, airline ontimes are at their worst in years.

Those are BAD numbers, but comparatively, CO's performance on this route (EWR-ZRH) is only 50% ontime. The two largest contributors to the 25% difference are likely the route and the condition of US's 767s. Both airline's use the 767-200ERs on this route, however US's 767s are low MTOW rated and could have more problems with the route environment. Additionally, US has had a larger number of 767 mechanicals this summer than usual. US needs desperately to acquire the 332s or more 333s in order to expand or even adequately maintain their international route system. With 3 new destinations set for next year, I'm not certain how they'll get through the 2008 season without them - or a short term substitute. I'd like to see them get 3 -340s late this year, or early next year, use them for Europe during the 2008 season and then start PEK in March 2009. Several 332s should be available for the start of the 2009 Europe/Eastern Asia season.

The 25% cancellation is the worst stat here by far. Maintenance hog a bit?

That stat is also absolutely bogus! Where the hell do those numbers come from.

We have been operating since June 9th and have had ONE cancellation on June 27th.
That makes it more like 1.8% cancellation.
We have not had a single diversion so thats 0% (one did retrn to PHL but ultimately made it to ZRH on a 8h delay)
of the 64 flights:
13 Have gone ontime
and 32 have gone within 10min of scheduled departure time.
That leaves 19 with over 10min delay. These naturally vary from anywhere between 11min and 9hours.

There is no US Air flight 710 , they have been US Airways since like last century.

The DOT statisics are the ones that matter, you should post those.

I agree, it is impossible that US would have canceled 16 flights out of 64. In fact, I will go so far as to say totally impossible.

There has been no real indication (other than this thread) that US 767s are having mechanical problems. Okay, there was the AMS 767 that blew an engine on takeoff. Pretty neat photo of that here on a-net. Usually I think they are pretty reliable. And there is a spare at PHL too, no doubt.

A little off topic: How are the loads like? How's the flight performing financial wise? I know it's still way too early to tell, but just to get a general idea.

Flew it on 7/11, 5 hour delay as a result of a late departure from PHL into ZRH, that being the result of a late arrival of the aircraft from ATH (according to the crew). IFE in Envoy was inop, missed connection in PHL to PHX. Substitute flight to LAS was 3 hours late which meant missed the last flight from LAS to PHX, stuck in a middle seat. Finally landed PHX at at 8AM the next day, 26 hours after leaving ZRH. Still waiting for the partial refund.
My definition of cool ? Not trying so hard to be cool.

Thats why you do not fly USAirways from PHL. Delay most of the time. Thats why I paid more money to fly out of SCE on another airline.

What happened last night with 710 to ZRH? Arrived today (Sunday 12 Aug) in ZRH more than 4 hours late.....AFAIK, there were no weather situations in the US Northeast yesterday...

Better be on time this evening...'cause I'm on it! Waiting at the PHL Envoy lounge right now and so far everything seems fine..

25 % cancelled?

you really believe 1 out of 4 flights is cancelled. Now that I type that out, and think about it, its not really that far off. Those 762's are really taking a beating in their lifetime

Looks like 710 went out 44 mins late today, but is still projected to arrive in ZRH slightly early, so that's full credit in my book. I am betting the Swiss do not allow their airports to become as screwed up with traffic as PHL is.

The loads have been incredible for a start up. July ultimately ended up with about a 96% load factor. June averaged out into the high 80% range (first week was slow but it quickly picked up after that) and August so far has been in about the 90% range.

THere are numerous MX delays but when they happen they tend to be in the 90-180min range.
Yesterday's 4 hour delay was an MX delay.

Keep in mind that the US Airways website gives the departure time as the time in the air. US710 actually left the gate on time and then had a 44min taxi time.

You might not know that DOT data has no international information , but there is a way to see dispatch times for leaving the gate, average taxi time etc, that can help in this discussion.
