Former AA Pier At DCA (question)

Sun Aug 12, 2007 1:21 am

Can anyone tell me when the former AA pier at DCA was demolished? Was it before or after the opening of terminals B and C? Thank you.

It was shortly after the new terminal opened in 1997. The historic part of terminal A was then restored Terminal B is partly new, partly old (CO gates).

Speaking of the old AA pier at DCA does anyone have any pics of the interior/exterior of it or the rest of the parts of the old DCA terminal that have since been demolished ?

When I would get stuck at DCA for a while and had finished eating at Legal Seafoods  Smile or bored in the Red Carpet Lounge, I would often walk down to the old terminal. Kinda neat seeing it. The tiny "museum" up the flight of stairs had a nice view of the runway.

Does anyone recall how many gates were on the AA pier? I vaugly remember there being about 8 or 9 gates. Didn't Eastern use a few too prior to their bankruptsy? Also, wasn't the Northwest peir supposed to be demoloshed as well making way for the entire terminal A renovation with new gates? Is that still part of DCA's plan?

Anyone by chance have a map of DCA early to mid 80s with airline locations and gate assignments?

I believe it was 5 (but might have only been 4). In the early/mid 80's those gate were used by AA, New York Air (and later CO), Air Atlanta, and Air Florida. On some DCA terminal maps I remember the US Air gates looked like they were part of the AA pier, but in reality the US Air pier was on a lower level (you took an escalotor down to get to them) and the AA pier was on the same level as the ticketing lobbies.

There were 5 gates upstairs used by AA and Midway II that faced the banjo. The Delta Shuttle gates were downstairs.

Before the new terminal opened, NW, CO, TZ & YX operated in the banjo, along with AE.

AA and Midway II were next, with the Delta Shuttle downstairs. TWA & UA operated roughly where CO is now. AC used a gate right out of the rotunda as did the US Shuttle, which was also downstairs.

DL & US were in the Interim Terminal.

checkmark  That was the set up in the very late 80's/early 90's once the North Terminal was demolished to make way for the new terminals.

DepartedFlights.com has a map from May, 1984:

Here's a map I scanned in the other day from Jan/Feb, 1994:

Thanks for the update and maps everyone....

I did fly out of DCA as a child back in the early to mid 80's on Braniff II. They shared the same gates with UA. I believe we departed from gate 27. I do remember seeing two Pan Am 727 and a DH7 parked on the Pier next to gate 27. I believe it was demolished once the interim terminal was opened.

I also remember the Red Carpet Club was excellent for spotting back in the day too.

Braniff II originally used Gate 1 (as did Western and NW) in the Banjo Pier at DCA and later moved to the gate they shared with UA.

That was the Pier for the North Terminal. The gates on that Pier started with gate 29 and went up to gate 34 or 35 as I recall with PE using Gate 29, DL using 30-31 and PA using 32-34/5. You are correct, that Pier was demolished when the interim terminal opened.

Didn't Piedmont use a part of the North Terminal too? I thought there were a few gates off to the side of the north terminal.

Yes, it is now coming back to me. I flew out of DCA on Braniff II twice and departed once from the Banjo and once from the UA gates. I haven't been to DCA in about a year or so and that was to pick someone up. Are they going to ever tear down the Banjo and replace the gates in a similar fashion to Continental's gate layout? I know that was part of their initial plan.

Does anyone remember the walls of the hallway down to the circular part of the Banjo (gate area)? They had some strange retro curvature to them. I am a real Star Wars geek too, and I thought the walls looked similar to the Space Ship Tantive IV in the opening seen of Star Wars when the storm troopers attacked the rebels....at least that is how I remembered it as a kid in the early 1980s. Are the walls the same????

I flew out of DCA in the summer of 1983 on TWA to STL. That's exactly how I remember those walls. Of course, our trio was running as fast as it could to catch that flight, so I wasn't exactly soaking up my surroundings.

We flew into DCA from Charlotte on Piedmont, following the River Approach. What an introduction to DCA on a drizzly summer Sunday.

Piedmont had its own mini-terminal that was an attached as an extention on the North side of the North Terminal. I believe it had 3 (or maybe 4) dedicated gates on a second level above the ticket counter. See the blue & white map above and you will see the location.

Hopefully that horribe "banjo" terminal will bite the dust sometime soon.

It seems that there is a lot of tarmac space in front of the original terminal in between th CO gates and the banjo. Will this are be utilized for anything other than RON parking?

It's interesting what you'll find in the old terminal like the small museum and aerial views of the airport (I wish someone would put these pictures into a book about DCA because if it were published, I would buy it) over the years plus a quiet spot for watching most of the action. I woudl love to have see pictures of what that area must have been like int he 1960's-early 1990's. Also there is a set fo stairs that literally goes nowhere because there's a sheetrock wall at the bottum of it.

Depending on where the stairs are it may be leading to some of the gates that until the mid-90's were loacted at ramp level. These included former US Air gates in their Pier just behind the AA Pier or the former Eastern Shuttle Gates off the historic ticket lobby.
