Major League Baseball Team Travel

Mon Aug 13, 2007 7:24 am

Folks are quick to post when they see a charter wide body at their home town airport bringing in an NFL team-- what about baseball teams? Do they own their own planes a la the NBA? Charter from the airlines? Any particulars on team airplanes?

The Diamondbacks have thier own 737 I believe, and the Tigers a DC-9. Red Sox use DL, Yanks CO, Brewers YX, Royals YX, Braves DL, and so on.

That looks like the Seattle Mariners heading back to Seattle on a Delta 738 after their series in Chicago...I would imagine the reason you don't hear nearly as much about baseball charters is that 737s and A320s aren't nearly as noteworthy as the widebodies many football teams need to use.

Milwaukee Brewers and Bucks use Midwest Airlines's, 74 seat corporate cabin layout, MD-80.

White Sox use an A320, http://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL9904

In 2005 they were with American and used a B752, maybe they need to go back to American and see if that helps in the standings.

Rockies use a B727 which is owned by a team owner.

Also, Cubs use ORD in Chicago while the White Sox flights all depart and arrive to MDW.

The new name is teamjet? operated by Pace, they have three aircraft a 734,733 and a 752. Oakland A's also will use this service, and a couple of times the Mariners have used it.

That would be the Nationals.. they must be happy today coming back from 5-1 in the 8th to beat the Diamondbacks.

Wondering why does the Red Sox use a DL 763. Seems to me to be an overkill.

While the Yankees do in fact normally use CO, and they even have their own Flight number, 1908, for the last month or so they have been using Miami Air 734's, normally the one with Miami Heat titles.

Cheers

(And I'm a Reds fan. I just realise they haven't been anything even remotely close to good for like 10 years or more now)

Anyway, anyone know if the aircraft cabins are reconfigured with bigger and wider seats for these charters (for either MLB or NFL charters) or are they left in a standard cabin configuration?

The Red Sox charter is DAL9838: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL9838. It's usually a 763, but sometimes (like today) a 752.

The Cardinals' charter is AAL9435: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAL9435. Usually a 752, but occasionally an MD-80.

I tuned in when the D-backs pitcher still had a perfect game, and then almost turned it off right before Ryan Church homered to tie it up. Great win.

Looks like the Nats use a 727 from Champion Air, a charter airline created out of the former MGM Grand Air.

The Toronto Blue Jays currently charter an aircraft from Miami Air, usually a 737-400
Texas Rangers have a team owned 727 which they share with the NHL's Dallas Stars, Rangers logo on the port side and Stars on the starboard side. Detroit Tigers also share their airplane, a DC9 with the Detroit Red Wings

Uncle did a ferry flight DFW-ATL last month, and picked up the St. Louis Cardinals and took them back to STL.

Puljos is a really nice guy, I'm told.

AA fly them on a 752.

Yes AA flies the Cardinals, Rams and Blues. Interesting note: Blues are owned by Dave Checketts who is on the BOD at B6.

That is kinda surprising. I knew about their marketing relationship with WN being "The official airline, " but didn't think about them handling the charters. How long have they held the contract?

Delta also handles the Pirates, another equally sucky team (and I'm a diehard Pirates fan so I can say that). Typically a 738, but morphs into a 757 when needed.

Indirectly, yes.

Due to a bout of rains in the spring, the Pirates and Giants had two games rained out at PNC Park. Monday the Pirates and Giants will play a double header at PNC Park to make up for those two rainouts. This is, ironically, after the Pirates just played a 3 game series in San Fran this weekend. The flight which you listed is the Giants' flight, bringing them to Pittsburgh to face the same Pirates that just swept them on the left coast.

I checked on MLB.com. Monday was probably an off-day for the Pirates and Giants per the original schedule. However, probably due to a rain-delay the game was rescheduled for a day both teams had an off day....ie, tomorrow. In fact, there's a double header tomorrow. The Giants and Pirates just played each other this weekend in SFO and will play two games in PIT tomorrow. The Pirates then resume their normal schedule, playing the Mets on Tuesday.

This probably means the Giants and Pirates both left SFO around the same time for PIT.

So my question is do the airlines make a lot of money on charter flights, I guess the must or else they wouldnt do it. It seems like it is almost a waist of an aircraft. They have to fly it to a city to pick up the team then fly the team to whatever city they are playing at then fly the plane back empty to its base (or let it sit in a random city for three days) then fly it out empty again to pick up the team. They must charge a lot of money.
