Real Close-up 787 PAX Window Pics

Wed Aug 15, 2007 11:46 pm

Last night IAD787 posted three pictures on his blog. I can't post them here due to copyright stuff. However, they are pictures are of the REAL 787 windows. According to his blog, these are the actual window frames going on Dreamliner Two made by Alenia.

This should put the "are they really larger debate?" to rest once and for all. The pictures illustrate the actual measurements of the windows because there is a tape measure right in the photograph!

ALSO, there's a picture of the inside of the center fuselage for Dreamliner Two being worked on in Charleston.

Pictures are Here:

Thank God, I'm so sick of the 787 window threads.

YES, they are BIGGER. Here is the proof.

The D2 fuse pic is really cool actually. Good to hear they're installing ductwork and such before the unit gets to Boeing.

Are you suggesting the window frames installed on Drealiner One were fake?  Wink  Wink  Wink  Wink  Wink

One important item to report: Dreamliner One power on is happening in the next 10 days.

So the common wisdom was its 6 weeks from power on to first flight, right? Aug 25 + 6W is Oct 6.

The date certainly sounds feasible, but 4-6 weeks is a perception created here on a.net.

Tell me do you know what the size of the windows are on the E70 ??? I though they were quite big and last weekend when I was on one I remember thinking the 787's windows are going to be even bigger.

Anyone know how they compare to the windows on the HS748? On those units the spacing is crap, but the size of the windows is awesome...

Well, I found a link to PPG who is making the electronically dimmable systems for the 787. There is a picture of the window and it seems huge.

While the window is large (very nice and....) I also like the perceptive stuff they do around it to make it look even bigger. The PPG is a perfect example, the smooth "opening curve" that leads from the window, the large oval definition line surrounding the whole thing. Be curious to see what the actual airline interiors do with this. The way the PPG pics shows it you could have a window ledge if you wanted but I suspect the real interiors will have the typical plastic protective insert that sits nearly flush with the passenger space.

I've been curious about that myself. I would guess they're about the same size. The windows on the DC-10/MD-11 seemed to make those types feel more spacious than they were. I always thought L1011 windows, which must have been at least a couple of inches smaller, especially in height, than those on the DC-10, were hard to see out of. They also seemed to be mounted a little too high on the fuselage compared to the DC-10/MD-11.

I think HS748 windows (and those on the F-27) were a little smaller than the similar oval-shaped windows on the Vickers Viscount (and Vanguard) which probably still set a record for large airliner windows. If memory correct they were 26" x 19" at their tallest/widest, so big the emergency exits were just the windows themselves as they were big enough to climb through.

Now those are real windows eh! I know the 748 isn't that big, but now that I think about it the square-ish overwing exits really aren't more than an inch or two wider/taller than the window in them. A little off topic now, but my personal favourite feature is found on the Hawker - the combination emergency exit and cargo loading door in the lav. Nothing like having a quick pee before evacuating, and being one of the first out  Wink

Is there really anything new here? The measurements were already known for a long time, and the tape measure only confirms them.

Credit: Seattle Post Intelligencer

Note the Seattle PI's dimensions for the 777 windows are slightly off, probably to emphasize a point... This Flight article had them at 388 x 273 mm (15.3 x 10.7 inches), i.e. the same width as the 787 but 3.1 inches shorter. In summary:

787 windows are 10.7" x 18.4" spaced 24" apart
777 windows are 10.7" x 15.3" spaced 21" apart

So, compared to the 777, each window is ~20% larger, but there are 13% fewer of them for a given length of the window belt.

I have to ask, why did they use that pygmy dressed in pink? A person with a normal-sized head would have been appropriate to give a better sense of proportion.  Big grin

UPDATE: After speaking with several people in Everett it looks as though power on will not happen in the next 10 days despite a fervent effort to achieve this goal. 500 of 600 tasks still remain before this can occur. There is a general time line for when this could happen, and I will provide an update as soon as one becomes available.
