What Do The Fedex Feeder Planes Do?

Sun Aug 19, 2007 5:42 am

Whats the purpose of operating the Fedex feeder planes? What do they usually carry? Where do they normally fly?

I am just wondering because I could never figure out how the whole Fedex feeder service works.

i just received my Airliners Magazine Sept/Oct issue in the mail today. The cover story is about FedEx. It describes their fleet of 246 Caravan 208Bs, 10 Caravan 208s, 17 F-27s, 13 ATR 72s, and 29 ATR 42s.
You can purchase the magazine at Borders.

They carry packages from small airports to larger airports where they then be flown to MEM for sorting and delivery around the world. Not every airport can support an MD-11 or even a B727.

Good question, I assume that as the name implies they feed into smaller markets that have few if any facilities that can accommodate larger aircraft and/or large volumes of parcels/freight.

They used to have this at IAH,

though I believe they use a Cessna Cargomaster now

The feeders (operated by Empire here, not sure if this is different elsewhere) carry mostly high-priority, overnight-type packages from smaller airports around a region to the bigger FX station. Here at PDX, we have trucks coming into the airport ramp station from all over the state of Oregon, but if someone drops off a package in MFR or RDM in late afternoon and pays extra for overnight service, the truck just isn't going to cut it as it runs on a set schedule. Our feeder planes/pilots usually have a dedicated route, one flight to/from PDX and their outstation. I heard one guy even has his own courier route there, so he flies from PDX to his smaller airport, unloads his plane, loads his truck and then delivers the packages.

FedEx domestic feeders are operated by 6 different contract airlines, Corporate Air, CSA, Empire, Mountain Air, Westair and Wiggins. FedEx owns the planes but they have operational control over their crews, maintenance etc, but are responsible to accomodate reroutes and adhocs per FedEx system control needs.

The feeder system runs as a scheduled operation out of many 'mini' hub cities throughout the US. They basically do what the big jets do out of the major hubs. That is, the larger jets come inbound to MKE for instance, they are offloaded and the local (close in) freight is put onto trucks and the freight destined for locations more remote (RHI, MQT, CMX, ESC, IMT in this case), gets loaded onto the feeders and flown to those locations, the reverse happens when freight is inbound to the major hubs.

Add to that Baron Aviation services. They are about to start up a new run out of IAH utilizing a Cessna 208B Super Cargomaster. Martinaire already operates a 208 here under a UPS contract to Victoria, TX. Theyre great aircraft that hold a lot of cargo, let alone their STOL capability.

It's the regional carriers for FedEx. Same concept as regionals for people carriers except more they typically feed into other focus cities instead of directly to the hub.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!
