When Will Skybus Add New Destintations?

Tue Aug 21, 2007 4:11 am

Things have been pretty quiet on the Skybus front lately. I have heard very little advertisement going on in Columbus and they have not had any sales (except for the $10 promotions - which are pretty much all taken). A few weeks ago I heard Punta Gorda, FL and I know they recently got permission to fly to CUN and NAS. I am wondering, are they doing well financially and when a new group of cities will be announced.

I read here a while back that a new focus city should be announced real soon now, along with a few more destinations out of CMH.

(fingers crossed for GYY as new focus city)  crossfingers

Its a little early for another focus city. I was told by people at Skybus that they'd like to be somewhere around 20 destinations from CMH before opening another focus city. Skybus crews operate 1 day trips, no overnighting. If Skybus opens another focus city, they'll need to open another crew base, which is an expense they can hold off on for now. There's got to be more possibilities from CMH first.

I'm pretty sure they'll announce Cabo San Lucas soon (don't ask why, gut feeling)  wink

And give it some time, they just opened up San Diego, Hartford/Springfield and Jacksonville/Daytona Beach last month.

I was just wondering this myself yesterday. Its been rather quiet lately at the Skybus camp. Any forthcoming cities being looked at? I would think SFB to get into the Orlando market or PIE for Tampa.

Are Skybus doing some consolidation after rapid initial growth? The sort of thing most rapidly growing businesses need to do from time to time

Wilmington DE would be a good destination. PHL is 20mins away, BWI is an hour or so away, ACY, the Jersey Shore and DE shore are close.

Skybus would be good in FSD since the proximity of Omaha, Minneapolis, Missouri River, Mount Rushmore (kinda far lol) . But the only way they would last is if they allowed connections to Jacksonville, Ft. Lauderdale, etc.

Palm Springs (PSP) would be a good destination for Skybus, even though they fly to Burbank (BUR) and San Diego (SAN). Roughly two to three hours drive between these three cities.

As for Skybus' next new destination -- hard to tell.

There are TV commercials every now & then in Columbus (naturally). I've heard radio spots for Skybus in Dayton as well.

I was on their SGJ-CMH flight today & flew to SGJ last week & both flights had to have been 3/4 full. Deplaning at CMH in the rain sucked, though. (TR coming soon!)

As I have said before... I have found some other possible destinations. I was bored at work and picking through the HTML of skybus.com main page and found these....

CMH to SWF PGD(already knew that)
GSO to FLL
MCI to BLI
BUR to BLI PGD SAN SWF
RIC to PSM
SAN to BUR
OAK to BLI
BLI to BUR MCI OAK

The only facts these are based on are that they are in the javascript for selecting origins and destinations on the Skybus site. I'm not saying any of these are definite just happened to notice that they ARE there. BUR as a Focus city possibly?

Do you think that Skybus will ever try to crack into the "Chicago" market? Now obviously they aren't going to be flying into MDW or ORD, so which Chicago area airport do you think they'd fly to? RFD? Or maybe they would fly to ENW in Kenosha, Wisconsin lol, that way they could list it as Chicago/Milwaukee.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

Absolutely... if they want to be a national player, they have to get into the crucial Chicago market in one form or another. RFD already has Allegiant and NW Airlink, so I see SX choosing GYY instead and making it their new focus city.

I think you guys need to chill out and stop expecting this airline to do a hyper expansion....Southwest Airlines did not get where they are by opening a new city every other day.....So give Skybus a chance to get into a groove with the cities that they serve....When you expand beyond your means you soon end up in Chapter 7 liquidation....

My friends at the Chattanooga airport have said they have been in talks with Skybus. They believe CHA is a good fit for Skybus and can pull traffic from ATL, TYS and BNA.

They need more planes in my opinion before they do any more expanding.

In my opinion there isn't a better market in the world for SX than GYY. It is a perfect match of supply and demand. I'll just leave it at that.

That's the reality. They have to fill out their current routes with more frequency before opening a bunch of new cities, and that takes more deliveries.

It would hurt in a sense that they'd have to change their pricing since feed is basically dead weight. You have to pay for the extra fuel and handling that a connection passenger requires.

Not likely. Too much distance to cover in a car and it's too cheap to fly from BNA as it is.

It would not seem to make sense to put a second focus city so close to your home base. They might begin service there, but I'd bet RFD over Gary.

I agree with Lexy. CHA is a 2 hour drive from Nashville, over a mountain, and the traffic into the city off I-24 and to the airport can be a bear. BNA has WN, B6, and F9, so we have our LCC bases covered reasonably well. Not sure how much traffic they would get from TYS. They might draw pax from the northern Atlanta suburbs. CHA has been mentioned several times as a reliever airport for ATL as the drive time for the northern fringe folks in Atlanta is about equal to CHA as it is to ATL during rush hour.

65 A319s on order per Wikipedia. They have at least four in use so far (SX orange livery, Nationwide logojet, two in a white livery).

Are these the a/c still leased from Virgin America? When do they actually get their own Airbii, with that genrous 29" pitch?

Yeah, I saw all 4 in CMH last Friday. Reminded me of an Independence Air Ops minus 3rd party handling by DGS and no jetways.

Running off at the typerwriter...

If they want into the Atlanta market, well...AHN or GVL would be the place to be, but I don't think either airport (both have max rwy at about 5500 ft) are capable of handling a fully loaded 319. So in that case...CSG. Yeah, yeah, not going to get a lot of ATL originating traffic. I do feel like CSG is underserved however, between AFLAC HQ and Ft. Benning. Surely military related folks (not using military flights obviously) would like the availability of something in CSG. Enough demand to handle 2+ 319s per day? Doubtful. Not enough pull from ATL.

Otherwise...I've said it before, and I'll say it again...two birds, one stone = GSP for ATL and CLT. Not going to get too much ATL O&D there either.

However, those ideas all suck. CSG can't pull from ATL, though it does need more air service. AHN and GVL are the optimal airports, but no runways. MCN is much the same as CSG...wrong direction to keep folks from just using ATL. That pretty much leaves CHA. It's not optimal, not even close, won't pull any from BNA, but it's a realistic alternative for the suburbs on ATL's north side.

With the July 16 start-ups, 5 a/c are needed to fly the tightly scheduled flights -- no idle time for any of the a/c anymore. (They haven't announced NAS or CUN yet have they? Weren't they supposed to start in ~October?)
