Falling Ice Hits Home

Tue Aug 21, 2007 6:32 am

I'm quite sure that this type of incident has occurred many times and has been discussed on the boards. I'm trying to figure how ice could fall from a airliner with the conditions we have been having in California. I guess it is possible that the ice was dislodged on approach to SFO.

I wonder what the conditions would have to be like for ice of that size to fall from a commercial airplane? A "bowling ball-sized chunk of ice" seems pretty large to form on the outside of an airplane.

MODESTO, Calif. -- A family's breakfast was interrupted Monday when a piece of ice fell out of the sky and through their roof. The ice had been dropped by a plane that was passing through the area. One piece of ice fell hit a 10-year-old boy who resides in the home. A large hole remains in the roof. Authorities are in touch with the Federal Aviation Administration to find out where the ice came from, and what caused it to fall.

Have the authorities never heard of gravity?

Seriously though - lucky escape by the family.

It sounds like the infamous "blue ice" which doesn't form on the outside of a plane but rather inside small compartments in the front and rear of an aircraft of you get my drift.  wink

Glad no one was hurt but talk about something that will make you lose your appetite.

Ah the "blue ice", according to the article:
"Firefighters on the scene said the fragments were brown and white, and looked like dirty ice. They found two brick-shaped chunks and lots of smaller shards."

I think I will leave it at that.  ill

Didn't a car in TPA get hit by this ice. Talk about the term "Oh Shit".

I feel bad for the family and wonder if this would covered under home owners insurance or some insurance? Also wouldn't a bowling ball be wide body a/c or from an a/c like a 757?

Pretty sure insurance would cover it since it is definitely not "an act of god". And you can count on the insurance company going right after the airline. I wouldn't worry. Airlines don't need this kind of PR and renovations are relatively cheap.

It did not cover that guys mustang in S. Florida. Yes, all insurance companies would go after the airline responsible for the damage. But whether the airline can be tracked down is totally different.

Take for instance NYC airspace, which is totally congested. If a piece of ice falls on the MET life building, it would be hard to tell where it came from as some 100-200 a/c and up to 60 airlines.. Now for SFO it could easily be narrowed but hopefully the airline gets tracked down. Hopefully someone can explain this better than I can.

Just make sure you document the time... don't they keep the tapes for 15 days?

Years ago some "blue ice" fell on a womans house and ended up in the living room. She thought it was a meteorite and put it in her freezer for authorities to examine. I would have loved to seen the look on her face when she found out what it was really made of!
