Russia Seeks Assembly Work On A320 Successor

I cant see them getting final assembly, just assembly of major sub sections.

Me neither. Final assembly in an other country than France, Germany or the UK is probably not acceptable for these countries. However, if EADS/Airbus manages to gain independence it might be an interesting option for a cheaper plane.

If things work out with assembling A320's in China, that would make China the strongest candidate for a second assembly line, wouldn't it?

Hard to see how Airbus can grant final assembly to China and deny it to Russia. The precedent has already been set.

I don't see how the UK has much say in what EADS/Airbus does. More likely that Spain would be objecting to new final assembly sites being established without getting any of that work for themselves.

Airbus is quite simply 'estopped' from doing any deals with Russia while it remains part of EADS, a NATO-relevant defence firm.

The Russians, from the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) viewpoint, remain 'the enemy' for all practical military purposes. And very recently - within the last few hours - they've resumed their previous policy of acting like it.

"BRITAIN has scrambled its new Eurofighter Typhoon jets for the first time to intercept Russian nuclear bombers approaching British airspace, the Ministry of Defence in London said yesterday.

"In a display of muscle-flexing on both sides, when two Russian Bear-H aircraft appeared on British horizons last Friday, two pound stg. 67million ($165.6 million) Typhoons, based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, were scrambled to identify and shadow the unannounced arrivals, which turned back before reaching UK airspace.

"With relations between Russia and Britain deteriorating, the number of incidents in which Russia's submarines have been found close to British shores or in contact with Royal Navy warships has also risen, reports said yesterday. London's Daily Telegraph said there was a suggestion Russia could be testing the West's air detection systems and response times."

On its face, that would appear to be the most logical choice. However, I suspect Airbus won't want to give too much of their family jewels to the Chinese, especially if it's a new aircraft model. The A320 replacement will entail cutting edge technologies whereas the current A320, by the time the Chinese start manufacturing them, will be a design that's about a quarter century old. Airbus was created in order to preserve and advance the aerospace industrial base of the Continent. Giving away the technology, tools, and manufacturing prowess of cutting-edge aircraft flies in the face of Airbus' mandate (regardless of whether that mandate still drives the company or not).

"But" nothing, from the Russian's point of view. They have a factory...we want one, too.
Perhaps Russian production could be limited to the former Soviet states, on paper if not in reality.

That's interesting, but hasn't Boeing set up a design shop in Russia? How can it be that Russians would be allowed to design aircraft, but not assemble them?
