LAN Airlines Resumes A340 Service To LAX

Thu Aug 23, 2007 12:26 pm

From August 30 until September 28 LAN will upgrade its four weekly non stop flight from SCL-LAX replacing the Boeing 767-300 with an Airbus A340. The rest flights to LAX via LIM will continue offered with a Boeing 767-300ER

So during September LAN will offer A340 service on SCL-MAD-FRA, SCL-AKL-SYD and SCL-LAX routes.

The upgrade are possible because the put into service the 5th A340 CC-CQG from the next Thursday August 30 on SCL-EZE-SCL route (LA445/LA466 flights).

The new A340 CC-CQG keep same configuration of the rest LAN´ s A340s. In the middle of 2008 LAN Airline will upgrade its A340 with the new interiors Premium Business and new Economy.

Sorry if my english is getting worse, but how the positioning of the new A343 on SCL-EZE-SCL make possible to upgrade SCL-LAX from B763 to an A343???  boggled

BTW, an A343 on SCL-EZE? is this operation economic? if the demand is there why not more frequencies on a smaller a/c and using this elsewhere like JFK or MIA?

The EZE-SCL flights tend to be between long-haul flights that the A340s are operating.

Where's the new A343 going after september?

BTW, amadeus still shows daily B763 nonstop SCL-LAX-SCL during Sep.

To improve the operational results, specially to carry more cargo and because the limitations of the B763s.

From September 28 the rest A340s will enter into maintenance until the end of the year. So between September 28 until December 12 LAN will have only four A340 in service, operating for SCL-MAD-FRA and SCL-AKL-SYD routes. The dates maintenance program for the LAN A340 are:

CC-CQC September 28 to October 07
CC-CQE October 08 to October 31
CC-CQF November 1st to November 24
CC-CQA November 25 to December 12.

The information appears in the LAN flights program. So probably Amadeus update the aircraft information in the next days.

Correct me if I am misunderstanding: the B763 is flying LAX-LIM then changing for a narrow-body to continue the way to SCL.

These scheme leaves LA without spare A343, so how does LA spare the transpacific route? B763 is OK for Europe but not for the South Pacific due to ETOPS.

Would they have to charter a 4-engine if something goes wrong with one of the A343's over in NZ/Aus? Would they pull out one of the A343 from MAD to AKL-SYD and put a spare B763 on MAD-FRA?(i'm assuming they have at least one spare B763)

LAN has never got any aircraft for back up, specially in the A340 fleet. So when one of the A340 is out of service LAN reschedule its flights or reduce the frequencies specially to Australian route.

The Boeing 767-300 are perfect for Europe only for Ecuador and Peru but for Chile and Argentina the 763 is limited (the same case for SCL-LAX nonstop route).

The Chilean population in California is large and growing. I've been meaning to ask why only 4 times a week from Santiago, why not daily???? I'm sure if they leave the A340 on this route permanently, and go to daily flights, they won't have any problems at all filling them up.

You need 2 a/c rotation for a daily SCL-LAX, only have one available at these time, the other 4 are on MAD-FRA (2) and AKL-SYD (2).

Being that far south you need 2 a/c for daily service to almost every location in the US or Europe.

The route from SCL to LAX is more profitable via LIM. LAN launched its nonstop flights from Santiago four times per week and other three vía Lima because the Peruvian Government reduces the frequencies and 5th freedom rights for LIM-JFK and LIM-LAX route from 14 weekly to 7 weekly flights. The reason only politics.

No, you need a single aircraft to fly non stop four times per week. For SCL-MAD-FRA and SCL-AKl-SYD of course you need two aircrafts.
