Jet And Air Canada To Code Share To India?

Fri Aug 24, 2007 1:17 am

Air Canada and Jet Airways are negotiating a code-share agreement. While Jet will offer one-stop service (via BRU) to YYZ from Delhi and Mumbai, AC would code-share on Jet's flights between London and India. AC is groundhandling Jet in YYZ and Jet may join Aeroplan to access AC's FF market. I can't say whether this is a prelude to codesharing Jet's Canada-India flights, or code-sharing beyond each other's main hubs.

That is interesting for sure.

I just read on another forumm, and cannot substantiate it as yet, that AC will commence codeshare with Swiss on their Zurich-Delhi flights commencing Oct 25/07.

Is YYZ ZRH year round daily?

Is YUL ZRH year round daily on swiss, and I assume that is an AC codeshare flight too?

So presumably AC will be able to offer YYZ DEL and YUL DEL via ZRH?

YYZ-ZRH, no

YUL-ZRH, yes

Is YYZ ZRH dropped entirely in winter season or reduced freq?

I would have thought YYZ ZRH trafic would be a little higher than YUL, not the other way around.

Dropped completely

Historically, YYZ-ZRH in winter is low yield because it is basically O & D. (If you were Swiss, why would you want to go skiing in the Laurentians?)

Toronto-Zurich hasn't been a good year round proposition for AC since the end of the war in Bosnia. AC got good refugee traffic at agency rates while the way was on.

So that begs the question, why is there enough traffic out of YUL for a daily year round and not enough out of YYZ for any flight at all?

I realize the markets are different etc, but YYZ handles 3x the traffic and has a much larger population base? Is a lot of the YUL to ZRH traffic going to GVA?

So there will be no AC option from YYZ to ZRH, other than via FRA?

Seems odd they would bother codesharing on the ZRH to DEL flight then but I guess they must have something in mind.

YUL-ZRH is on LX and offers access to all of the latter's network.

YYZ-ZRH is an O&D route. There just isn't enough Swiss-originating Canada traffic in the winter to make it worthwhile. Now, if AC gets enough new aircraft - perhaps keeping a few XM 763s after the 787s begin arriving, perhaps this will change, but right now AC doesn't have the lift.

Air Canada will continue to offer year-round Toronto-Zurich traffic, however with reduced frequency from the base daily operations in the summer.

Montreal-Zurich is a different situation, with different traffic mix.

That makes sense, although Sebring claims above it's "dropped completely" I don't know if he meant dropped completely from winter schedule or if he was suggesting AC had dropped ZRH as a route completely, year round.

Jet seems like it would be a good complement for AC. Certainly it would be great for the carriers to be able to feed traffic at both ends. And Jet already has an alliance with UA, doesn't it? So perhaps aligning itself for a possible membership.

Goyal said a couple of years ago that Jet wasn't interested in being part of an alliance. Was pretty dismissal of the whole thing. Wonder if that is still the case?

If 9W becomes AC's "strategic partner" will this mean than 9W might join Star Alliance instead of the (now merged and still state-owned) AI?

Mr Goyal appeared on BNN (formerly ROBtv and owned by CTVglobemedia) earlier today. The "Report on Buisness" article is based on that interview. Its too bad that 9W doesn't offer faster journey times by offering a refueling stop nearer the "Great Circle Route" or flying YYZ-India nonstop.

Believe it drops down to 4 weekly during the fall, and back up to 5 during the winter ski season (January - onwards).

That would be absolutely awesome!

9W has so far stayed clear on commenting on that front. There were some rumors that both AI and 9W would join *A, but personally I don't see that happening (the other alliances should try their best to try and prevent India from becoming a *A monopoly).

According to Great Circle Mapper:

2 segment path: 12473 km
YYZ BRU 6062 km
BRU DEL 6411 km

YYZ DEL 11662 km

Via BRU is just 7% further than non-stop.

For the record, Sebring's information that YYZ ZRH is "dropped completely" is incorrect. In fact AC just announced increase to frequency YYZ ZRH to 5x weekly during winter months and returning to daily in summer. From another web site:

"Air Canada's planned 4-weekly Toronto - Zurich service will increase to 5 weekly eff 07JAN08. The day of operation is X57. The flight will go back to daily in April 2008."

There are rumblings that LH is fuming mad at AI for proposing a hub in FRA.

9W joining STAR would be fantastic for STAR flyers in Belgium! Finally some options to fly direct. Let's hope....

This can also impact the decision for (SN)BA to choose alliance...

YUL-ZRH is on LX and offers access to all of the latter's network.

Whenever I've flown LX ZRH-YUL-ZRH there are always quite a few connections from/to GVA. YUL is a more popular destination from the French-speaking part of Switzerland than the rest of Canada for linguistic reasons. I recall a GVA airport report a few years ago that listed YUL among the top 3 longhaul origin/destination markets from GVA without direct service. Tokyo was another and I believe the other was Washington.

LX also carries a lot of connecting traffic between YUL and points such as TLV.

So will that impact AI's possibly entry into *A? Or is this just a posturing/bargaining thing?
