MAN-YOW: Any Chance?

Fri Aug 24, 2007 3:27 am

I'm travelling to Ottawa next month and may be making more visits in the future. YOW has direct summer flights to LGW, GLA and LHR (yearound) in the UK but none to MAN, which seems a bit of hole in the UK market (and inconvenient for me too!). Surely even a summer only service would work well, but there has been no such service this summer and none that I can see on offer for next summer yet either. A B757 service would be fine, even with a stop en-route at another airport such as YHZ (thus opening another market from MAN).

Anyone able to offer any rays of hope that MAN-YOW may be considered by TCX, TS, Z4, etc?
Like a fine wine, one gets better with age.

I would not hold you breath. Ottawa is very thin off the ground in terms of direct flights to Europe. It not as bad now with Zoom in the picture but still pretty grim. Looks like you will have to stop somewhere!

TCX used to fly MAN-YOW and LGW-YOW 2 years ago, but dropped the MAN route in favour of LGW.

I remember those 2 flights would come in one after the other once a week.

Those days are long gone..

Those were awesome days. I used to handle those flights as a CSA and loved seeing the two 752's side by side at the gates. Great crews on those Thomas Cook flights aswell! On the last flight of the season one year, the captain traded me his antique Thomas Cook lanyard for my crappy First Air one. What a gentleman.

I can remember the number of pax we checked in would usually be pretty high. Plenty of occaisons when we maxed out at 182 per plane. Numbers on average would be 160 to full.

Wouldn't MAN-YUL with TCX be convenient? It's easier than flying into YYZ in terms of getting to Ottawa.

Wouldn't flying MAN-LHR-YOW on BMI/AC be even easier? TCX 2 summers ago had a YOW-MAN flight, but it only lasted that summer. For some strange reason they thought Mondays would be a good day to operate to MAN only minutes apart from their weekly LGW flight. It would have made a lot more sense to operate this flight on a Thurs, Fri or Sat. I doubt TCX will try this route again. Apparently YUL-MAN won't be back next year either.

Zoom is probably the best hope for a YOW-MAN or YOW-YHZ-MAN route...they do have another 757 on the way for next summer.

On a side note, Zoom's preliminary summer 2008 sked for YOW shows 3 flights/week from LGW and 2 flights/week from GLA. So taking a cheap LCC flight to LGW or GLA is also an option, you just have to go through the hassle of re-checking-in.
