Air Canada Online Check In - Emergency Exit Seats

Fri Aug 24, 2007 11:35 am

Good Evening Everyone,

A funny thing has happened to me twice now when checking in on AC's website. I flew YHZ-YOW last week and when I checked in it automatically assigned me an emergency exit row. This evening when I did the same for my YOW-YHZ flight it once again gave the the exit row.

Is this something new with AC or is is because of my Aeroplan membership or what? Whatever it is, I like it!

This is an issue that Ive been complaining about for a while, There seems to be no rhyme or reason to who gets the exit rows on flights. Ive been operating flights where I have had several annoyed Super Elites all ask me if the exit rows are taken, only to soon find out that a mother with an infant managed to get them from web check in. Or a family of four with very young children manage to get the exit row.

IMHO exit row seating shouldn't be accessible to web check in, You should only be able to get it at the airport where an agent can verify that yes indeed you are legal to sit at an exit row.

I for one don't care who sits in the exit row, as long as its someone that is qualified and able to open the exits. I had a family give me a nasty look once when I told them I would have to move them out of the row. Of course I understand they want to sit together, and I'd do my best, but they were just about ready to pick a fight when I at the suggestion that their kids could not sit in the row.

There is a love/hate relationship with these seats.

Love: Extended leg room on certain aircraft
Hate: No recline, and the coldest seats in the house being adjacent to window exits or doors.

Surprised they're assigning them on line, as I thought they were held in reserve for airport check-in.

Not allways true, it is aircraft dependant. For example on the CRJ705, rows 20 and 21 are the exit rows. 20 does not recline but 21 does.

On the CRJ100/200 series row 8 (The exit row) does recline.

all the times I've checked in online the exit rows always show occupied. But these last two times (E190 on the way up and assigne dme 19A) and a CRJ for tomorrow it has me planted right in 8A.

WestJet will allow you to pick EE rows online, but there is a pop up box explaining the rules etc.

I think the best seats on AC (other than the flight deck seats of course) are the first row of each cabin on the L or R side on the 777 (by the door). You have basically unlimited legroom there by the door. The problem is that I notice that people who sit there tend to take advantage of the extra legroom and toss their trash everywhere by the door. And they wonder why I don't look so amused when I pass by.
