They were busy this week; their planning department must have just woken up from their hibernation. They also added additional capacity in MIASTI and MIAPLS, as well as BOSPLS, DFWPLS, and DFWPTY. On the other hand they pulled ORD back quite a bit with the exception of EZEORD.

Timed for Latin American flight as usual. PHX-MIA is a logical next step for AA at MIA. I keep wondering about MIA-AUS and what seems to be the delay on that.

How much was ORD pulled back?? Besides ORD-PDX have any markets been dropped?

Also does AA have any 738s on order?

47 remain from a previous order that was deferred. Nine of the those will be delivered in 2009, as the company recently moved them up from 2012-2013. I wouldn't be surprised if we hear about more move ups in the next six months.

I think its just going seasonal, but AUS-MIA could work year round simply because AA has a large hub in MIA.

I suppose this makes sense just due to PHX's relatively large status as an AA outstation - there are lots and lots of flights to DFW and ORD every day, many on 757s. But MIA initially seems strange - since Arizona and Florida are both warm-weather winter destinations, air traffic between the two states is incredibly small (people from the cold states will go to either in the winter in large numbers, but people don't go between the two very much). For example, MCO only gets three flights from PHX, TPA gets two, and FLL gets one. Of course, it is Saturday and summer so the numbers are probably even smaller than normal, but they don't get very big. Contrast this with eight flights between MSP and PHX, and a total of 12 flights between MSP and Florida. Even in Major League Baseball, teams have spring training in Arizona or Florida, but the Diamondbacks don't train in Florida and none of the Florida teams train in Arizona. With the sole exception of the Dodgers, all west coast teams train in AZ and all east coast teams play in FL, with the central teams going to either.

This part is just my own observation, but... I go to ASU, which has something like 30-35% out-of-state students. Basically, I meet people all the time from all over the country. I meet lots of people from nearby places like OR, WA, CA, NV, CO, and TX. I meet lots of people from northern states like MN, WI, IL, and MI. And, I meet lots of people from out east, like NJ and PA. However, I've only rarely met people from the southern states, like an occasional person from TN or GA. I've never, ever met anybody here who was from Florida.

I suppose it will help that the flight connects to the Latin America flights, but I don't imagine that there will be all that many O&D passengers on there.

I think the only reason this flight is existing is for Latin American connections, not O&D. If you look at the times, it is timed for Latin American Passengers, not O&D.

It was removed from booking systems last night.

They could never fill a 738 with just Latin American connections, the main ones (GRU, CCS, and EZE) which can go via Dallas. Latin America connections, cruise traffic, and O&D are all what the flight is aimed at. The flight will probably end up having a healthy 40% or so of O&D traffic, like most domestic routes AA has from Miami.

Quoting HPAEAA (Reply 11):

Should be back to daily by 13Dec07.

So far MIA-PHX is one of four new routes AA is launching from Miami on 13 December. The other three being SAV, SRQ, and BAQ.

As stated above, Miami and Phoenix are huge city with many corporations on each end. This has been missing from AA's route system for a while now. Also stated about the route is timed perfect for Latin America connections. While there will be some tourists on these flights, this is not what AA is going for on this new route. They want business travelers and connecting passangers. AA has flights between LAX-MIA, SFO-MIA, or LAS-MIA. These are both warm destinations too, correct?

Not usual for the western states, say look at SFO a much bigger market: 1 flight to MCO, 0 to TPA and FLL (unless you go across the bridge and catch B6 daily flight to FLL) and LAS is also similar to PHX.

Only one more spring training in FL for the Dodgers, in 2009 they are in the Valley..

One of Phoenix's problems is a lack of corporate headquarters..

I'm happy to see AA growing MIA and PHX was expected to be one of the first major-route additions there. It will be interesting to see what moves are next and how things shake out in MIA, SJC (with Eagle), ORD, BOS...  scratchchin

I (naturally) second your sentiment, '747! (So MAH', any tidbits for us here in San Diego... regarding MIA, BOS ...or anything else involving AA?)  crossfingers

With B6 also making some South Florida moves lately (and more expected I guess) I wonder if there is a bit of a duel developing here between the two cx...  stirthepot

I would assume that there will be new service to replace what has been pulled, either new routes or increased frequency on existing routes. Simply put, with the operations cap imposed by the FAA, if AA cuts the number of operations at ORD, someone would petition the FAA for those slots. You have to assume that AA isn't about to let another carrier get its hands on any of its current slots.

You also have to figure that some of the cut back may be due to the winter service to the ski resorts, Acapulco, and West Palm Beach.

On AA.com, the new nonstop flight PHX-MIA is not available? When will they be loading it?

Will the a/c on this flight most likely be a 738? This a/c seems the most feasible to me.

Well this flight comes to late..... for me  Smile, I go to PHX at least twice a year from PTY. in the past I was loyal to AA, and it was a loooong trip with them PTY-MIA-DFW-PHX and the connections to PTY from PHX were not possible at one time, I am using now CO and CM but with this I could be tempted to go back to AA, from December I could do PTY-MIA-PHX, or even better PTY-DFW-MIA.

Does any one remembers if PHX-MIA have been flown in the past by AA or has AA code share with other airline in that route?
