Air Afrique Is Back, Sorta--1st Flight In MAR08?

Tue Aug 28, 2007 4:36 am

Sorry--it's only in French:

Les premiers vols de la compagnie Air CEMAC prévus pour mars 2008

http://www.jeuneafrique.com/jeune_af...e.asp?art_cle=PAN70027lesvosramru0

*The first flights of Air CEMAC are expected in March 2008
*4 out of the 6 partner countries have already conceded air traffic rights to the company
*In December 2001 the chief of states decided on the creation of this carrier with a backing of 21 billion FCFAs (about 43.7 Million dollars?)
*Not much word on the aircraft other than "not many"
*Countries involved are Chad, Gabon, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinee, Central African Republic, and the Congo (Brazzaville)
*SN Brussels is somehow linked to the project but they are waiting on contributions from the member countries (good luck with that)

Too bad that somehow nobody noticed this thread....

From the article in Jeune Afrique:

"Malgré tous les efforts consentis pour mener à terme le projet, beaucoup d'hommes d'affaires de la sous-région ne se sont pas montrés intéressés. Les spécialistes ont interprété cette participation minime à une très faible implication des gouvernements des différents Etats dans la mobilisation de leurs opérateurs économiques."

So indeed very few private companies are interested in participating in the project, thus it seems becoming another Air Afrique indeed. SN Brussels is apparantly waiting for more participation, before joining.

Note that another new version of Air Afrique is planned in West-Africa. In the ECOWAS-region the countries have agreed, in principle, to launch a regional airline, currently with the working name EcoAir. This not only includes the French-speaking countries but as well Nigeria and Ghana.

The headline of this thread is misleading. The new company would have nothing to do with the defunct Air Afrique! New assets, new employees, and certainly zero debts initially!

It's very interesting to notice:

1- The participation of Equatorial Guinee, since it's not a French-speaking ex-colony but Portuguese. Nice to see linguistic barriers dismantled.
2- The non-participation of Cote d'ivoire and Senegal, the 2 major contributors to the former RQ.

Wishing the new company success and profit! This will necessitate that governments involved avoid interference, which ruined RQ.

currently with the working name EcoAir.

Don't hold your breath. EcoAir has been on the drawing table since 2003, with no progress.

Equatorial Guinee

Equatorial Guinee is an ex-spanish colony and not portuguese. They speak spanish there too. I think you must be mistaken with Sâo Tomé & Principe.

I stand corrected. In this case, it's still a relief to see linguistic barriers blurred.

Since both are not members of CEMAC, it makes sense they are not involved. If EcoAir ever get's of the ground, these countries could be involved. The bottomline is that there is no reason for either of the two, to step in and create an Air Afrique-revival. Air Senegal International and Air Ivoire are doing well, with connections to the premium market in France and connections to their respective neighbours. Neither country stands anything to gain from such a new airline. It's only their smaller neighbours, i.e. Mali, Niger, Burkina who stand to gain something.

So is this the final nail in the coffin of Cameroon Airlines?

Camair will be privatised this year by the government, but an initial partnership deal with SN Brussels Airlines was later cancelled for unclear reasons. However, I expect the Cameroonian government to be more interested in reviving Camair rather than setting up Air Cemac in cooperation with the neighbouring countries.

A private airline is being set up in Cameroon too: New Airline For Cameroon (NACAM) (by ENU Aug 30 2007 in Civil Aviation)

Well, not untrue. I would have prefered if the headline of this thread would have been correct: Air Afrique operated almost all kinds of jets available of Boeings, DC and Airbus, for which I loved them...
