Funchal/Madeira Windy Landings Video

Wed Aug 29, 2007 5:55 am

Just came across this video. I just love to see these windy landings at FNC. This is the "airport on stilts" that has the extended runway over the cliff.

Apparently seems as entertaining to watch on windy days as Kai Tak was in its day.... although not many heavys at FNC I presume.

The comment below the video mentions that the Thomas Cook 757 landed 2 hours after their two go arounds.... Would they have circled for 2 hours waiting for the winds to calm down??

In any case, enjoy.....

You should have seen some of the truly great approaches before they extended the runway on stilts . . . !

I was lucky enough to travel on the flight deck on a number of occasions, and just like Kai Tak where the approach was similar to flying towards the checker board, and then turn sharp right, and from memory the cross/down draft at FNC came from the cliffs/hills on the left of the approach - quite fun!
