Ryanair New Routes From Bremen:

Thu Aug 30, 2007 12:28 am

Again great news for Northern Germany and Holland:

Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline today (29th Aug) announced two new routes from Bremen to Alicante and Palma de Mallorca. The new routes will start at the end of October and bring the total number of destinations served from Bremen to 20.

Announcing the new routes, Ryanair’s Head of Communications, Peter Sherrard said:

“Ryanair has now doubled the number of low fare destinations offered from Bremen since it launched its base in April 2006. In September, our new routes to Alghero, Bratislava, Malta, Milan, Paris, Stockholm and Trapani will open and with today’s expansion over 1 million passengers will enjoy Ryanair’s lowest fares from Bremen in the coming year, saving €100m compared to Lufthansa’s high fares and fuel surcharges.

“These new routes go on sale today on www.ryanair.com from just €10 including taxes we urge passengers to book immediately”.

To accommodate this new route to Alicante, Ryanair will stop flying from Bremen to Murcia (50 minutes from Alicante) at the end of October.

What routes does TUIfly operate at Bremen? Are those just once a week holiday charters, or also scheduled daily services?

They have to become more active in southern Germany, Bavaria e.g. is a complete Ryanair dessert and Baden-Wurettemberg is only slightly better. Don't they know that the Swabians are famous for their economicalness?

Where did you find this information? And why is this another TUI leave for FR: where did it happen before?

I'm surprised they haven't started Memmingen yet!

TUIFly seem to have established themselves in that market with a good mix of domestic services, charters and Rome and Naples. Although probably room for FR as well

I think established is a bit of an overstatement: they just started their first routes last June, and only have one aircraft based yet. The second aircraft, that will amongst others be used to serve FCO and CGN, will only arrive for the winter schedule. All in all, it's a very early start and IMHO anyone who jumps in now, will still experience quite some first mover advantages. I think GRO and ALC are the most likely Ryanair starters.

By established I mean they've built up a good sized operation for the market, and they are growing. They've got themselves a piece of the market. Just have to hope they dont do a DSA - go into the airport when its opened, run a decent sized operation, and then stagnate

Somehow I fear this to happen as well. Memmingen doesn't provide a catchment area like Stuttgart, Cologne or Hamburg and so I doubt it will be able to support a 4-5 airplane base. Well, we'll see.

It is now confirmed by Tuifly. They have one aircraft based in BRE for this winter. Obviously they lost one big travel agency after they renamed Hapagfly into Tuifly. Must be a rival of TUI then.  Wink

Large reductions are also made in Leipzig.

Another smart move by Ryanair which will pick up the passengers. BRE-PMI certainly cannot be difficult to fill  Wink

Why don't they call Murcia just Murcia? The city is larger than Alicante and it is the capital of the Murcia region of Spain, while Alicante is located in the Valencia region and it is not even its capital!

I guess they are telling you that Alicante is close enough to Murcia and that no great inconvenience will be caused by loosing Murcia! Just a thought!

Happy landings

There are several reasons:

-Murcia has its own province and Alicante too, both them are capital of their provinces. Besides Alicante belongs to the Land of Valencia.

-Murcia is not larger than Alicante, they are very similar. Murcia municipality is 800km2 and where many towns far away from Murcia are included like if they belong to the city, Alicante municipality is only 200 km2.

Alicante town 320.000 inh
Murcia town 190.000 inh

Murcia municipality 420.000 inh
Alicante municipality 325.000 inh

Alicante urban agglomeration 450.000 inh
Murcia urban agglomeration 420.000 inh

Alicante Metro Area 750.000 inh
Murcia Metro Area 580.000 inh

Alicante province 1.800.000 inh
Murcia province 1.450.000 inh

-Population in Alicante city is being duplicated in summer while in Murcia decrease cause people go on holiday to Alicante, ig.

-MJV airport is 50 kms far away from Murcia city and is located next to the border of ALC province.

-Cathment area of ALC airport is bigger due to the metro area and province is bigger and airport is better located.

-ALC area is more important in terms of economy, population, inmigrants, and of course tourism, below you can see tourism figures from Spanish statistic's Institute www.ine.es:

-ALC airport is almost saturated so airlines use MJV as secondary.

That's why Ryanair, Virgin (before becoming SN), or Norwegian sell MJV as Murcia-Alicante or Alicante South, and why ALC holds 9 mill pax and MJV 1,7 mill pax.

What i want to know is why they are dropping MJV as this seems to be a very simple case of changing the bremen - murcia flight into a bremen to alicante flight. What is the ryanair advantage of this change in airports, their usual approach would be stick with the cheaper smaller airport not change to the larger one ?

Load factors 2007:

MJV-BRE 66,8 %
MJV-HHN 70,7 %

Seems that LF is low, HHN is going to be dropped too.

Once ALC has been set as base FR can take advantage of ALC base facillities, and it suppose people will prefer to fly to ALC (or FRA) instead of MJV (or HHN).

I expect the HHN route to switch over to ALC as well. I was actually surprised it wasn't announced together with the BRE switch.

Pity enough FRA is too crowded to cater these (mostly) holiday flights. Okay, AB have a flight FRA-ALC, but the FRA-ALC sector has such an ugly timing (4:15am) that I wouldn't be surprised if many people going on holiday prefer the Ryanair afternoon departure.

There is still no reason to sell Murcia as Alicante. Air Berlin is serving both airports and selling them by their real name. Aena is not calling Murcia " Alicante South". Ryanair could sell Bremen as Hamburg west or Hanover north, but they do not.
It is just not logical to call a city by another city's name.

Yes, but FR does.

GRO official name is Girona-Costa Brava and AENA calls it as "Girona" but FR and others sell GRO as BCN, the same happens with SDR-BIO.

An airline wants to make money and is logical they do everything possible to make it.

Many airlines do this. I have seen Transavia adds in Stockholm and Denmark promoting cheap flights to Amsterdam*

The very small footnote for the * was: Operated from Rotterdam.

There's been lawsuits by Dusseldorf over the name of NRN which with the comming Ryanair changed it's name from Niederrhein to Dusseldorf-Weeze. Naturally DUS and Dusseldorf were not very pleased, but hey does Weeze ring a bell to any of you??

And naturally.. LONDON STANSTED.
