Old Terminal At IND

Thu Aug 30, 2007 3:28 am

First, I want to apologize to those who don't live in and around Indy that won't know what I'm refering to. I'll make it short. I was wondering if anyone has heard what is to become of the old terminal once the midfield terminal is opened in late 2008? I have a feeling it will be torn down. Kinda sad if that happens, because Concourse C and the parking garage were built in the 1980's, so they are not that old, so that would be kind of a waste. The inside has been remodeled so much in the last 15 yrs, that too, would be a waste to tear down.

Be nice if it could still be used, but consider the long distance between the old and new ones, it would not make any sense, if there were to be any connection passengers. I think I heard that the Midfield terminal is suppose to have 40 gates. That's not much more than what we have now. Also be nice to see a foreign carrier start service, but I doubt that will happen. Yes, I know that AC Jazz flies to YYZ, but I mean to Europe.

Any info would be great.

IND is in the process of looking for a European carrier to start service to a major European hub as soon as the new terminal opens in 2008.

Ramp Guy, I heard approx. 1 year ago that the old terminal was to become a sort of shopping mall, with the parking garage being kept intact. I don't know if that is still the plan, as I haven't heard much about it since.

The days of the old terminal are numbered. I'm sure it will be demolished and I'd give my left one for a chance of pushing the button to set off the demolition lol. That building offers nothing. Concourse A, B and D look like something (and for the most part are) out of the 1960's. The airport was constructed in the 1960's. I'm not sure which parts were opened first but we all know concourse C was the last to open in 1987. There are some good memories with the place but you can't keep an airport open because of the garage and a 20 year old concourse. The rest of the place is bad. That building sits on some valuable real estate. It could be converted into ramp space for FX or additional hangar space or other airport related business. The one thing I'd bet the farm on is that once the new terminal opens the old one will have seen the last of passenger service.

Is that a rumor based on some kind of inside information or speculation?

A friend of mine in IND told me that supposedly FX is funding a good portion for this new terminal project, since they would like to have the site of the current terminal to build a new and larger facilty for themselves.

I'd love to see it become something like the HHH terminal at MSP, or the East concourse at STL before it was joined to the main concourse. But I'm not going to hold my breath, as my money's on it being demolished. If they turn it into a mall, the stores would be very tiny, and I'm sure someone is going to start asking questions about unsecured locations with large windows overlooking the ramp.

Congratulations to IND for achieving an important milestone in building a magnificent new facility.

As for the quoted text, try telling THAT to STL, which is trying to make do with yet another "refurbishment" of the half-century old main terminal. Ambitious plans, but nowhere NEAR the ambition that IND is showing.

The big difference between IND and STL is that IND had the space available to build what basically amounts to a brand new airport (new terminal, parking, access roads, etc) and STL didn't. I would imagine that if they had the space they would have opted to build a new terminal instead.

Isn't IND one of NW's focus cities? I thought they had a large presences there, or is that 9E? Would a 757 have the range to do IND-AMS?

Depending on the time of year NW has somewhere between 40 and 50 flights a day here. The 757 should have the range. It is only a few miles different between IND-AMS and DTW-DUS (or was it DTW-FRA?).

I hope that the airport authority building the new Midfield will move the TWA plaque to the new terminal. It is across from where the old TWA ticket counters used to be and commemerates the first 707 (thus passenger jet) flight into what was then known as Wier Cook- Indinanapolis Munincipal. IIRC the start date was sometime in 61 or 62.

IND is certainly forward-thinking in doing what it's doing and I can't wait to see the facility fully finished! To respond to Indy:

Well, the airport itself developed a plan for such facilities prior to the AA takeover of TW! Click the link (it opens slowly) and go to page 11!

http://www.tisp.org/files/isbe2004/panel_2b/griggs.pdf

Also, on UrbanSTL.com, someone offered this idea for reconfiguring the existing facility!

Big version: Width: 640 Height: 180 File size: 46kb

There isn't MUCH wiggle room to build/rebuild, but they can do something with the space they have!

At least IND had the cajones to do it!  bigthumbsup

PIT moved their TWA plaque to the new terminal - hopefully IND will do the same!

I'll be at IND in two weeks. I'll try and remind myself to take a good pic of the plaque. It is after all a significant part of Hoosier aviation history.
