John Travolta, A380 And A Cheeky Photo

Fri Aug 31, 2007 3:04 am

I didn't know that John Travolta had piloted an A380 ? How did he do ? I had the misfortune to see his movie Battlefield Earth, which really screwed up the story line of the book, and his acting is always "cheesy" IMHO but cheeky fun nonetheless. So, how did he get to fly an A380 ?

According to previous Airliners.net post , this was about a year ago? Any updates?

The article you posted is interesting. And while it states that he flew the 380, the previous thread does not. I read the entire thread. Granted, the thread title says he did, but the content therein makes no reference to it at all.

RE: John Travolta, A380 And A Cheeky Photo

Washington, June 23 (ANI): Hollywood star John Travolta has created history by becoming the first non-test pilot to fly the new Airbus A380 super jumbo.

http://airbus-a380-news.newslib.com/story/8420-1061/

The actor, who is a qualified pilot and flies himself around the world for filming and family vacations, was full of enthusiasm while telling about his experience of flying the Airbus A380.

"I was the first non-test pilot to fly the A380. It was a moment of history. It was fantastic. It's very easy to fly," Contactmusic quoted him as saying at the Paris Air Show on Wednesday.

"It was a handstick operation. It is very forgiving. If you make a mistake, it handles it for you thanks to the latest technical evolutions, whereas I am used to the older Boeing that is a much more hands-on type of flying," he added.

Travolta, however, denied that he was planning to purchase an Airbus A380 for himself.

"Now I have enough planes. Most of my time outside my profession is dedicated to my schooling in aircraft," he said. (ANI)

Well, I guess we can dismiss him as a mystery customer for an A380 or 748i executive aircraft. Could it be that he felt that considering the trouble he is having keeping his 707 at his house he might have even more trouble with one of those?

Always make sure you make the solution worse than the problem.

Yes neighbours, I will happily replace my old noisy 707 in Qantas colors with a... 747-200 in Qantas colors... or a brand new A380 ... but you may not be able to see the sun with that one.

What? the 707 really is ok?

Niki Lauda flew it earlier according to "Aero International". It was in the May or June issue of the newspaper.

Well I guess the A380 would be quite a lot quieter than the 707 he has now...........

John Travolta cannot afford to purchase a brand new A380 maybe in 15 years that would be a different story.

He does not have 275 million dollars

The guy is "qualified" as a private pilot, airplane single engine land, and instrument. That's it.
He flies his family around insofar as he has a fully qualified crew who let him sit in the pilot seat and hold the controls when there is no one else aboard. AFAIK he makes motor noises with his lips when he does it.

You can buy a 707 and fly it for a year (at his usage level) for the price of a C-check on one of those airplanes.
Least I've ever heard of a 707 selling for was a flyable one with a very nice interior for about the price of a good used Bonanza at the time, $65,000

Of course he paid more I'm sure. He paid over $50K for his first DC-3 from a man who had paid $17.5 for it a month earlier.

Travolta is qualified as a "line pilot" on Qantas 744's.  Smile But in this case I'd say QF stuck him in the cockpit when it came to Australia as a publicity exercise and to give him a taste of things to come. I'd also suggest that he was up there with "real" QF pilots.

In any case, can you imagine the first Qantas A380 on it's inaugural run with John Travolta as a co-pilot? Oh the publicity!! Fly the 707 in, fly Wunala Dreaming in and then fly the A380 in last. etc etc

What is your source? I understood that he held a bunch of type ratings including 747; he owns a Gulfstream which I presume he flies himself, and that requires a multi-engine rating as well as a type rating. To act as first officer on either that or the 707 don't you have to be qualified on it? Neither are certified for single-pilot operation AFAIK.

Yes it's true and and anyone can look it up on landings.com or through the FAA website. I've heard various reasons that Mr. Travolta never obtained an ATP including the fact that he never completed high school which is a prerequisite for the certificate.

That being said he is an outstanding ambassador to aviation. The naivete of the celebrity publicity machine is partly to blame for the mystique that he alone is in the Boeing 707 cockpit and it was he alone that landed the G-II over Washington when he suffered the total electrical failure in IMC some years ago. In fact John Travolta is smart enough to hire the best pilots he can and knows, even with 5,000 hours total time, he is no Boeing professional test pilot.

Airmen Database Search Result

Name : TRAVOLTA, JOHN JOSEPH
Airman's Address : 15821 VENTURA BLVD STE 460
ENCINO, CA, 91436-4778
FAA Region : Western/Pacific
Date of Medical : Sep, 2005
Class of Medical : 1
Expiration of Class 1 : Mar, 2006
Airman Certificates : Private Pilot
Airplane Single and Multi Engine Land
Instrument Airplane

I would just like to point out one thing here though this doesn't seem to very accurate source as I hold an FAA MEL(multi-engine land) IR(instrument rated) and this site says that I don't hold a license.

You really dont think so? The man is still receiving royalties for grease at a rate of over 1 million per year and more than that for most of his other movies. He also has Millions upon millions invested around the world.

If a smart actor can make 30 million (Travolta has made WAY more) he can easily double that by investing wisely...

I dont think Travolta would have a problem pulling out 275 million dollars. Or let me rephrase that, if he wanted to i am sure he could find a way  Smile

I think this is a bit out of date. Nevertheless, it does state that he has a multi rating; the only thing it doesn't say is what type ratings he holds. As to not having a Commercial or ATP rating, he doesn't need them. Some people like to collect ratings like trophies, others don't bother. It doesn't have anything to do with his abilities as a pilot.

Hey go easy on the guy - he is a good actor sometimes - liked him in "a civil action" .... Power to him if he has flown the A380 ... still a much better role model than say Lohan or Vick .... So he is a little crazy about airplanes .. wouldnt you boast if you got a chance to be in the A380 cockpit - flight deck for the more PC. ??? I know I would

I am only recalling this from memory, but I thought he had flown it during the A380's first visit to Australia, where his N707JT met the A380.

If he's speaking about flying it at Le Bourget show, he's talking bull*** since Singapore Airline Crew had been training for a long time in Toulouse, EK crews had flown it & Qantas crews had already "played" with it in Australia.

That said, he is correct in saying it's quite easy to fly. For anybody that has flown on 707s, DC8s etc., flying a modern fly-by-wire A/C is a breeze. Start doing something stupid and the computers will stop you. Leave the joystick alone and the aircraft will just continue on its course. Come to think of it, it's really the computer flying the a/c with the pilot giving it input - one input among a lot of others.

That being said, JFK787NYC has brought up a interesting point. I think his point is interesting because I have daydreamed myself with the notion of "what would it take to own an A380 or heck a 777 200 lr to haul my friends around....(that would be cool)

and in several discussions with friends alike ...not only would you need the 275 M to pay for the darn thing but the fuel costs and maintenance costs for up keeping a plane of that caliber are in the millions per year easily....if you are not an airline operating at bulk ..maintaining and up keeping that bad boy requires some serious cash...
heck just the hangar to keep it in....wold cost several thousands per month...+ having the infrastructure to maintaining it (maybe building a mini terminal for it) would be of order millions...

I heard, though by NO MEANS confirmed that usually when you own a jet liner..you should be prepared to have 70% of that same plane in parts ready to replace in order to be able to give it proper maintenance...over the life of the plane...who knows maybe that is just a dumb rumor I heard

personally I find it hard to believe he could truly afford to own his own A380...but you never know.....

which makes you think of those who HAVE ordered it...they must be wasted in money...(but that is another story)

cheers...

But that is for an airline operation where downtime can be disastrous to the operation. If JT did have an A380 and it was down for any reason I believe he could get by. Now which of his other planes would he jump in? Plus his utilization will also much lower, so wear and tear is going to be negligible in comparison. But your overall point that the purchase price is only the beginning is very true.

Well, as I like to say, a determined pilot can crash any aircraft no matter how "safe". You can do plenty of stupid things in a FBW Airbus. Still, the aircraft will not stall or break in normal law.

Also, it's not a "joystick". It's just a "stick", but you are correct about leaving it alone. Then again, a properly trimmed Boeing will do the same.

hollywood stars are not as rich as they seem, and he's no exception. only TV stars who were involved in producing their own shows are truly among the super rich in entertainment, at least among actors. Seinfeld, Leno, Larry David, etc. are way richer than guys like Travolta.

2x $30m << $275m.  Smile

At 8% return per year, you can double your money every 8 years (1.08 ^ 8 ~= 2.00), before taxes.

Starting with $30m, a little over 3 doublings (2 x 2 x 2 = 8) probably gets you into an A380, if you can get a 15-20% discount off list. 3 doublings take 24 years at 8%. So if he started saving his pennies (3 billion of them) back in 1983, he'd just about have the money to buy one today, if he went "all in". He'd have to switch to mac'n'cheese for dinner, though.
