WN Flight Hits Birds @ ELP, Returns (Aug 26 07)

Fri Aug 31, 2007 5:34 am

I know things like this happen every day all across the world...

http://www.kvia.com/global/story.asp?s=7006181

The damage, at least from the photos provided doesn't look too severe...

Anyone have any info on the flight number, the ship # and how long it was out of service for? How bad was she damaged?

Of course, the TV media (notice how it's the channel's "I-Team") waited until they had a visual, like pictures taken by a passenger's camera before they broke the story.

Migration times are the prime times for bird strikes..... Spring and early fall

Yep, had one two years ago in a GA bird at PDX (at 9:00 in the evening nonetheless-you'd think birds would quit flying at night!). The only damage was some blood and feathers that got caught in an inspection panel on the wing. Scared the hell out of us, we were doing the ILS into 28R (VFR practice approach) when it sounded like someone fired a shot gun at us. It was around this time of the year...

Any chance they were Canadian Geese - we could use a few less.

In ELP? Doubt it. I don't think Canadian Geese migrate over deserts  Wink

Just this past summer, in early August, I had to help pick up about 50 European Starlings' remains off the runway at CLE. The aircraft that hit the flock, a CO BE1900, was beginning to flare, and an inspection revealed a little, but not severe, damage.

I don't know how far south they go, but they definitely make it south of ABQ Might just keep following the river valley all the way down to EL Paso area.

Years ago, A Delta DC-9 landing Alexandria, LA had a goose strike at low altitude and it came through the radome, and into the forward bulkhead area inside around the captain's rudder pedals.
