After Thai Air Asia and Indonesia Air Asia , soon a new Air Asia budget carrier in Vietnam.

Which country will be the fourth to get an Air Asia affiliate ?

Will Air Asia become a kind of Virgin in South East Asia ?

AirAsia is scheduled to sign a letter of intent with a Vietnamese party on Friday to set up a low cost carrier in Vietnam.

It's VINA AIRASIA! Welcome onboard Vietnam.

AirAsia plans low-cost airline in Vietnam
The Star

AirAsia Bhd will today sign a letter of intent with Shipbuilding Industry Group with a view to establishing a joint venture low-cost airline in Vietnam. AirAsia, in a filing with Bursa Malaysia yesterday, said the proposed partnership would focus on securing the licence to operate a new Vietnamese airline that would serve domestic, regional and international routes.

“The new airline will be built on the successful low-cost model pioneered by AirAsia in this region,” it said. The statement said the airline would carry the name VINA AIRASIA.

The new airline would serve domestic, regional and international routes, and eventually build two distinct divisions to facilitate short- and long-haul aviation, AirAsia said. Vinashin will assist the JV company in securing grant of governmental or regulatory approvals, concessions, permission, licences, certificates and any other approvals to facilitate operations of the new airline.

There were previously plans to set up AirAsia franchise in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh but they were yet to be materialised. I personally hoping for Pinoy AirAsia and who knows, Singapura AirAsia! By then, AirAsia will have hubs in all South East Asian countries with large population (Indonesia 230 million, Thailand 60 million, Vietnam 85 million and the Philippines 90 million). Myanmar, with 50 million population and low penetration is very attractive too. And if AirAsia wants to go beyond South East Asia, India AirAsia and China AirAsia are compulsory. In fact, AirAsia's franchise should be in ALL Asian countries for that matter.

In my opinion, AirAsia is more likely to become the RyanAir of South East Asia rather than Virgin. But looking at the macro scale, taking AirAsia X into consideration, indeed AirAsia is going towards becoming like Virgin, with short haul hubs in many countries and long haul operation all together.

Could be unless Virgin groups starts something in East and South East Asia.

We need more LCCs in East Asia.
My name is Centrair but HND is closer. Let's Japanese Aviation!

It's beyond my imagination that a commercially-organized domestic LCC would function in Vietnam. Domestic traffic by VN and BL is highly subsidized there and the regular price of a 2hour SGN-HAN trip is little over 100$. And just to fly into Vietnam Air Asia does not need a local branch.

Or perhaps a Jetstar? Aren't they doing much the same, taking over Pacific Airlines and renaming it Jetstar? Uncomfortable days ahead for VN, I think!

The heat is on in Saigon!
