What To Expect On USAirways Express

Thu Aug 17, 2000 6:04 am

Hello:

My friend is visiting me in September, flying on USAirways Express from Roanoke to Charlotte, then to IAH. What kind on aircraft/service/experience should she expect? I have never flown on any commuter airlines and have no idea what I should tell her. Any comments appreciated.

She will probably fly on a DeHavilland Dash-8-2XX, which is the specialty of Piedmont Airlines (that sector of USAirways Express). It is a twin turboprop aircraft with a high wing and carries up to 50 people. While it's slow, it's also very stable. My only complaint about it is that I flew on one that had no air conditioning and it was beastly hot. Also the plane vibrates a lot, but I'm learning that is part of being on a turboprop.
The flight from CLT to IAH should be plain USAirways, not "Express". She'll probably be on a 737, possibly an MD-80.
Up, up and away!

I don't know about Piedmont but on Chautauqua, snacks are served and usually free alcohol.

I live in Greensboro [GSO.] We have many flights operated by Piedmont and their Dash-8's. I just went to Washington, DC and the flight up was aboard a Dash-8. It was a fairly loud airplane, but very good looking and well kept. The aircraft was in a 2-2 configuration except for the rear seats. A third was added in place of the aisle (it gives you a lot of leg-room!) The flight to DCA from GSO took about an hour. My return was in a 737 and the pilot was in a hurry to get to bed and so we made the trip in 35 minutes (scheduled for about 50 minutes! Tell your friend to have a great trip.

Jeb!
