Google Earth Flight Simulator

Sun Sep 02, 2007 2:06 am

Google Earth now has a flight simulator feature in its Google Earth application. Now it's not as fancy as Microsoft's but it's worth checking out. More details here.

Simply install the newest version of Google Earth (4.2) and the press Ctrl + Alt + A (capital A, so use Caps).
On laptops with Windows XP you might want to try Ctrl + Windows Hotkey + A (capital A, so use Caps).
It's quite fun but the plane is hard to control without joystick.

Did you make sure you have version 4.2 installed?

Go to Help->About Google Earth to make sure.

Ctrl + Alt + Capital A worked for me. Now I just need to figure out how to control it.

The problem I have with it is that the controls do not center themselves, so making minor corrections is difficult.

Reminds me a lot of FS 95.

Hahaha. Its pretty cool for fun and simple flying, Graphics are a bit dodgy lol. I'm still wondering why they hid this function it in the first place?

The yoke and throttle controls are the same as all the MS FS versions. I've been flying keyboard style since 1984 and FS 2.

My joystick doesn't work on it. Tried this last night. Its a nice addition, but not as good at FS9.

Wow...flying certainly isn't as good as FS9, but the ground textures are definitely (and perhaps not surprisingly) much better than anything in FS9, payware add-ons included. Pretty fun!

I have been thinking for a while it would be quite need if Google Earth would be advanced enough to use it with MS Flight Simulator. It's still gonna be a lot of work but that day will come for sure.

Not likely. Think of the two companies that would have to cooperate with one another for that to happen...

Definitely pretty likely that this level of crisp photo imagery for ground textures will be seen in MSFS at some point.

Very true, but I was more referring to the concept. Microsoft has it's counterpart from Google Maps and actually has this really cool "bird eyes view" feature.

There are plenty of sceneries for flight simulator that are based on satellite images and look very similar to Google Earth.

Also, Google Earth and flight simulator have been locked together before. It is possible to fly in a Google world with the MSFS engine.

There are some problems with satellite imagery for flight simulation, however:
1) No night/dusk/dawn textures
2) Integration with automatically generated scenery (houses and trees) looks unnatural
3) No dynamic shading, e.g. of mountains
4) The amount of data is much larger and for the whole world would encompass literally terabytes of data. In the foreseeable future, there is no way to put this amount of data into a software box.

This is why Flight Simulator has concentrated on landclasses (telling the simulator what the landscape should look like, and then generate it) and will continue to do so for a good while more.

There is a company out there that is doing hi-res satellite and/or arial footage laid over the MSFS terrain. From the screen shots, it's really cool. They did a good chunk of California IIRC. They then do a dynamic thing where they shade if for time of day, season, etc. Didn't look as much into that part.

As for the Google Earth one... it IS a bitch to do on keyboard. Only tried for a few seconds, though.

Not so hardr to fly, I am using the mouse. But does it have sound? Cause I dont hear anything. I am using a ibook, so I can't even figure out how to use the throttle. I did something and next I knew I was gliding 65,000+ ft. HAHA
