Good Spotting Spots At BOS?

Tue Sep 04, 2007 1:06 pm

Hey everyone,

I know there have been threads on this in the past, but I haven't found a recent one. Are there any good spotting locations at/near BOS that are easily accessible from the Pike? How do I find them, and will I get harassed by the police? Any replies are appreciated -- thanks.

Constitution Beach in East Boston is pretty easy to get to - just shoot straight off the Ted Williams Tunnel through the airport, exit toward 1A North, take the Rte 145 exit, follow for about 1/2 mile to Savio Prep, take a right, follow it through and you'll see planes across the water if 4/22s are in use.

I've taken several photos there with a 70-300mm lens, never been hassled.

I'm sure Castle Island will also come up - never been there (a bit inconvenient for me coming from the North Shore).

On top of the parking garage between the terminals is a good spot. There's one corner right here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...pn=0.001334,0.002511&t=k&z=19&om=1
that has a really good view of the ramp. I have a Sony DSC-F717 (5x optical zoom) with a 1.7x zoom lens, and took these:

...all but the first five were taken from the spot indicated by the Google Maps link above. Nobody bothered me, and a cop walked/drove past several times. There was another guy taking pictures there, too, for a while. It was difficult to see/photograph anything on rwy 27 (a UV filter would've helped), but everything else was fine. Have fun!

You're right this is a good spot, if not the best spot at BOS for spotting. !owever, this location has been closed to public viewing since shortly after 9/11. You won't last very long up there these days before security or State Police come and ask to you leave immediately. I've even heard a few stores of them confiscating people's photography equipment and not returning it. If anybody is caught up there, they'll most likely be given a trespass warning, and arrested if encountered at that spot at a later time! This is unfortunate because this was one of the few locations in the USA that I've found that was routinely frequented by fellow spotters. It was the best spot to at BOS as well in my opinion!

These days since the parking garage has been made off limits, I usually go to Winthrop and Revere Beach areas or Castle Island Park. I don't live in the Boston area though, so perhaps somebody else can direct you to some better viewing locations?

Winthrop is probably your best bet, when i'm on the field you have a clear view of winthrop at all times even in bad weather. 22L is only about 500 feet from Winthrop. The departures from the 4's go directly over your head there. If you have a boat it is even better you can get right up to the airport

And here I am.  Wink For 4R/L arrivals and 22 R/L take-offs, Castle Island is a great spot. You've got a hamburger joint, park benches, cruise ships and tankers in the harbor, absolutely no hassles for spotting or taking pictures. In the summer there's also eye candy...

Yeah, my favorite spot, especially for landings. I take my son to the playground there all the time during the European arrivals rush as an excuse to watch the big birds glide over the beach  Smile

If you are looking for planes in the air, Castle Island. But instead of going up by the fort, sit down along the beach a bit. The planes come right overheard - it's closer than a lot of other places. Plus, this is a very popular area (perhaps too popular), so you aren't going to get hassled. If you are looking for planes already on the ground, though, it's not so great. The other plus is if you are into boats, you can go out by the wharf and see lots of them out there.

I was down there about a month ago and some idiot had a kite on some really long line from over by the fort. It was way up there - don't know how he got it so high, but the planes were literally coming in below it. I was thinking about actually finding a policeman to say something about it, but had no idea where to find someone.

My two favorite spots are Castle Island (or actually the beach next to it - forget what it's called) for 4L/4R arrivals, and the bridge to Winthrop for 22L/22R arrivals.

At Castle Island, the beach curves around from northeast to southwest (via north) - sit on the southwest side so that the sun is at your back and the planes will be nicely illuminated.

The problem with the Winthrop bridge is that while the views are great for 22 arrivals, BOS often runs 27 arrivals at the same time, and you can't really see these from there (Castle Island is better, though not by much).

The beach at Castle Island is as close to SXM as you will probably ever see in the US. If you stand on one of the piers you can clearly see the flight crew and passengers looking out the windows. If you stand on the beach while a 747 skims over your head, it's quite exciting. And the parking is free and the food is good  Smile

Geez...they should really put a sign up there or something - I had no idea. And I was just there a few months ago.

I heard, about 10 years ago, that some little girl was flying a kite near STL using some really strong fishing line as kite string. Don't remember the numbers, but let's say it was 50lb line and she weighed less than 50lbs. Supposedly an a/c caught the kite, and she ended up getting a free ride into the upper branches of a nearby tree. No idea if this is true, or if this is some urban legend that has supposedly happened at every airport in the world. I'm guessing the latter...

Anyone know if the Hyatt Hotel (Across the bay, I believe) or the Hilton offer any good views?

For better viewing for 27 arrivals, one has to head along Route 145 further into Winthrop and park along one of the side streets or go near Deer Island. Is Winthrop Shore Drive (off 145) open to public access and/or parking? That's usually a great spot for 27 arrivals. It's been many years since I last drove by there.

No but it is Homeland Security and we know they don't need laws  Smile

Nope. It is a parking lot and if you paid to get there you're not in violation of either of those laws. It would be like saying someone who buys a movie ticket just to sit in the aircon room but doesn't want to watch the movie, is violating the law  Smile

Wrong. Don't take my word for it though, go and try it. See how long you're allowed to stay there  mischievous
