Air Panic At Mallorca

Tue Sep 04, 2007 7:12 pm

I am not sure if this is already posted.
From the Daily Mail online:

Terror on holiday jet as pilot takes evasive action to avoid hitting plane

British tourists screamed in terror when their jet came within seconds of crashing into another plane yesterday.

Their Boeing 737 was coming in to land at Palma airport on Majorca when the pilot spotted the other jet on the runway.

He pulled up sharply, avoiding disaster by only a few hundred feet.

Regular go around. Pax wouldn't have known there was an aircraft making a runway incursion if it was in front of their plane.

"He said a number of passengers screamed when the pilot forced the plane up using a surge of power which made the engines roar."

Jet engines do "roar"

It seems to me according to the news this is just a routine go around. The daily mail people just wrote a drama out of a go around, thats it.....

I've been lucky to experience a couple of go-arounds - the most memorable at LAX - memorable since they put us into a holding pattern for another 30 min or so. Captain always informed pax - always because aircraft hadn't cleared runway.

But you do get to feel the power of engines once they spool up! Nothing to be afraid of.

Must have been a slow news day at the Daily Mail - too many journalists, not enough news!

My workmate just told me about this:

"did you hear about the BMI accident at Malaga?"

"no"

"BMI plane came in to land and there was another plane on the runway - the pilot took extreme manouvers and the passengers screamed - very close call"

"A go around then. Righto".

"A go around?"

" Yes. It happens ten times a day at Heathrow?"

"How can it though? I dont think air travel is as safe as they say it is"

"Its fine. Really, dont worry."

"I'm only flying with reputable carriers now..."

The media have a lot to answer for IMHO.

B767, by the shape of the wing, I would say.

Totally normal. Journalists are even stupider than politicians.

Very often at MAD, happened to me last year coming from DUS on IB late evening flight and have heard the same from friends.

Of course not but I can hardly think of a different cause for it to happen.

Indeed, sounds like a go-around, a fairly routine occurrence. I have never been aboard a plane doing a go-around but was on a BW A340 in LHR which landed then returned to the runway after initially trying to turn off. A following AA 777-200 then did a go-around and I could hear its engines roar. On another occasion, this time in BGI, I observed a BW Dash 8 do a go-around after it came in closely behind an 8B Dash 8. I was aboard the BW A340 (the same plane in fact) when I observed this.

Sensationalist, the media in this case...

A missed approach, Gear issues, Pilot not deciding in time to put her down, ATC request... in the back you wouldn't know.

The video says it's an Air Berlin sightseeing flight (with intentional missed approach) so I would say its a 737

And nothing mentioned about all the other "sharp roaring manuevers" occuring at that very second in Europe....?

Can´t believe they were out of real dramas to fill up the space.

A few feet, then yes, nearly a disaster, but a few hundred feet?

Ah well, why report a non-story when you can use it to scare the sh!t out of people?

Good god, man, not a GO-AROUND!

My condolences to all aboard the jet who suffered through this terrible ordeal. How fortunate they are to be alive. And how fortunate *we* are to live the vicarious thriill of their near-death experience thanks to the voyeuristic slough known as YouTube. That grainy footage is pretty....yawn....spell....yawn....binding.

Indeed. I mean, whilst driving my car today I came within literally metres of other vehicles, and when I had to accelerate away my engine roared! I nearly soiled my pantaloons with fear - thank goodness I'm here to tell the tale.

LOL...very witty..I enjoyed that.

I wish I could experience a go-around. Seems like it would be a lot of fun.

I too long to experience a go-around. Really annoys me that I've seen so many and never myself felt one!

usual british press reporting rubbish.
Although i guess it makes a change from a "stricken jet plunging thousands of feet in a few seconds"
Why do they always "plunge"

I experienced a go around some years back in a AF A320, flying BCN-CDG. It seemed to me that the plane was almost at flare, when all of a sudden the engines were noticeably louder (like on take off) however we only started to lift up a few seconds after applying full power.

The pilot said inmediately that the runway had not been cleared by the previous flight, so he decided to abort landing. Funnily enough no one on board did even blink, I was a bit uneasy about that but got comforted by the reaction of people, mostly business people (it was the early morning flight)

I think that this makes a difference, if people are used to air travel they can tell between a real emergency and a simple maneouver, and they don't overreact upon these.
