Can some one tell me which are the biggest airlines in the world considering the total number of passenger?
What do you think is the best criterion: no. of passenger, revenue, RPK, fleet.....

No one carries more passengers than Delta.
No one has more planes than American.
No one flies further (RPMs) than United.
No one flies more international pax than British Airways.
No one flies more cargo than FedEx.
No one has more LUV than Southwest.

The world's largest airline is United, followed by American, Delta, Northwest, Continental, and British Airways.

In terms of passengers carried, Delta is the biggest. American has a bigger
fleet than United (over 700 planes, vs. close to 600 for UA). British Airways
carries more International pax than anyone else, except for possibly DL.

The US carriers rank as follows:

US Airways
Trans World Airlines
America West
Alaska Airlines

The "new" Air Canada is the tenth largest airline in the world. ANA is Asia's largest airline. Lufthansa is Europe's second biggest, followed by Air France,
then Alitalia. Varig is Latin America's largest airline. SAA is Africa's biggest

How very right you are.....good to see that someone has enough memory in that AA and DL are not the largest. Don't ever forget that before the fall of the Soviet Union in '91 Aeroflot carried over 110 million passengers in one year, and if it was still in it's old form today, would most probably come close to carrying 150 millions pax a year.

BTW people's, BA is the airline which carries the most international passengers. Their international network is almost twice the size of most US carriers.

Won't BA/KLM be the largest airline in terms of RPKs (Revenue Passenger Kilometres) when or if it is approved?

I think this would be becuase of the sheer length and globe-spanning nature of their merged network.

From Flight International "Top 50 Airlines Survey" 22-28 August 2000;

In terms of RPK
(1) United 201 910
(2) American 180 144
(3) Delta 168 599
(4) Northwest 119 337
(5) British Airways 117 463

In terms of passengers;
(1) Delta 105.5M
(2) United 87.1M
(3) American 84.7M
(4) US Airways 58.8M
(5) Southwest 57.7M

In terms of Cargo;
(1) Fed Ex 10 354 000T
(2) Lufthansa 7 072 000T
(3) UPS 6 044 000T
(4) Korean 5 962 000T
(5) Singapore 5 668 000T

I think RPK is the best indicator!

Had you read the topic of Dan's reply, you would have learned the airline he wanted to fly for....CO.
And by the way,,,What the hell is wrong with flying boxes? FedEx puts a lot of airplanes in the air each day, and makes a lot of $$ doing it. Seems like good job security to me.
