Aborted EK Landing 5th Sep & Fire Trucks @ DXB

Wed Sep 05, 2007 2:16 pm

Just came in last night on EK93 from Milan, and as we were about to touch down the plane aborted landing for a go around. After a while the pilot announced that they had aborted because they 'didn't have landing clearance' and there was 'some congestion on the apron'.

At first this sounded strange to me, that a few secnds before touch down they realised they didn't have clearance??? The aircraft then proceed out to seas and came back in 15 mins loater. Landing was quite fast and it took longer than usual to slow the aircraft down I thought.

I then heard from a friend who had arrived just a bit before us that he saw fire trucks screaming out to the runway. Just wondering if anybody can confirm what exactly happened with these two events and whether they are related.

Thanks

Wow, that sounds very odd. If your friend is right and there were fire trucks on the runway then the pilot probably said that to avoid panic. Will have to google it.  Smile

Sounds very much like what I have experienced back in ZRH in spring 06 - aborted landing and did a turnaround. You could then hear the 'no flaps' warning in the cockpit (it was on an Avro) during second approach. Slowing down on the runway took obviously longer and firetrucks were following the aircraft.

Nothing serious, just precaution. Guess this happens many times.

seems like a pilot trained to cover-up a technical problem...those are never good for an airlines image...

likely a mechanical issue..that's kept hush hush....typical of non western airlines.!

The fire fighters in DXB are always on high-alert especially during the rush hours (early morning, late night)

No it's not strange - it's normal and happens hundreds of times each day around the world.

An aircraft will be issued landing clearance based on the anticipation that a just landed aircraft or a planned takeoff aircraft will clear the runway. Then a short distance before touchdown both the pilot and the controller will realize that the runway will not be clear in time - and the aircraft is told to go around, or the pilot announces he is going around.

The same thing with runway incursions, either unauthorized or authorized.

The pilot is technically correct because the landing clearance is cancelled when he is told to go around.

From your description of the events, it's most likely the pilot of your aircraft only knew something was forcing the controllers to tell him to go around.

Another very strong possibility is that some aircraft was stopped on a taxiway which would have prevented your aircraft from clearing the runway in an efficient manner - so a go around was issued.

Lastly, when the crash equipment is committed to investigate a potential incident - most airports do not continue landing or taking off aircraft for a few minutes - because the equipment is out of position to respond correctly to any potential incident with your aircraft.

Happened to me on LH flight from MUC to DXB . We were comming into land then suddenly the engines roared and we went back up for a go around. Pilot came on and said the AC before us had not cleared the runway.
