Starting late this year AF/KL will test a system allowing pax to check in and board using a single chip card, as was announced at a press conference today at Charles de Gaulle airport. 2000 Frequent Flyer passengers will be the first use the system on the AMS-CDG route.
The chip contains biometric data and is therefore not transferable. Passing security checks at airports should also be easier now, AF/KL claims. A special technique allow boarding passes to be printed on the card for up to 400 times [weird, but that's what it says literally]
The card may also be used for hotel reservations or car rentals. The card should even allow to unlock the doors of the rental car and start the engine. This was already tested at Nice airport in cooperation with Hertz.
Is successful, AF/KL wants to introduce the system worldwide.
