Alaska To HNL Today?

Thu Sep 06, 2007 1:48 am

AS 9351 was scheduled to depart SEA at 8:40 to HNL arriving at 12:05, looks like its been pushed back a little. Is this part of Alaska's ETOPS certification? Anybody know any details?

It's an ETOPS proving flight. Consider it a "dress rehearsal," if you will.

Heads up HNL, Alaska Airlines Fligth 9351, a Boeing 737-800 (N577AS), is descending through 17,000 feet and is due to touchdown in HNL in 36 minutes. Enjoy the first sighting of an AS aircraft.

Alaskaair.com shows this flight diverted to Maui, then operated OGG-HNL. Anyone have details?

It was intended diversion. The FAA is onboard, so the crew basically does as they ask. And if they say "WX is bad in HNL, then your off to your diversion city"

As has been pointed out previously in this thread, this was the first validation flight for AS. The FAA was on board and testing the crews ability to react to certain instances. Looks like they were asked to simulate what would happen (most likely an engine loss since the engines are the most critical part of ETOPS flights) and the decision was made to divert to OGG over HNL. Why you ask go further south? It could be anyones guess but maybe they were given the scenario that HNL could not handle the situation and they had to go the alternate aiport (This case it was OGG). Aircraft was on the ground for about 3 hours and finally continued onto HNL. It will most likely head back to SEA tomorrow, but you never know what can happen on a validation flight.

Isn't AS serving OGG from SEA as well as HNL and LIH? Their initial service is to HNL, with OGG and LIH coming online soon after.

BTW, who is doing the ground handling @ HNL, OGG, and LIH?

For now it will just be SEA -HNL/LIH and ANC-HNL (seasonsally).

Unsure of the ground handling.

Impossible.

SEA time when the flight leaves, according to this 0930, is 1230.

You mean departure 0930, arrival 1815.

AS website shows in comments field as "not operating as scheduled" (special flight).

According to the KOA thread, AS is shopping around for ground handlers at KOA. Provided that HNL and LIH are successful, I wouldn't be shocked to see OGG and KOA start in the next year or two.

As far as customer service, United will handle in KOA and Delta in HNL. Dont know if they have their own ramp agents.

AS has flown to ANC for years  Wink

ANC-HNL daily service starts, I believe, December 9 and runs through April. Next year, seasonal service will begin in October. Don't be surprised to see this one go year-round before too long.

Haha! I didn't see that. I have an odd perspective. I like to center my flights and airlines from HNL.

Thanks.

Not if you properly transit the space/time continuum . . .  duck

Hope the flight was uneventful . . . I'm ticketed the AS bird to HNL 2/7/08 returning on HNL-ANC 2/15/08.  biggrin .

Oh, Lord . . . oh well, at least the ANC-HNL leg won't be hosed . . .

I suspect sooner than later - if AS has the aircrat to support it. I'd not be surprised to see AS start taking some of Hawaiian Vacations pax . . . . increase the number of seats to HNL from ANC . . .
