Connecting At JFK From DL To AA

Fri Sep 07, 2007 1:44 am

I am flying to London the night of 30 September on AA 100 departing at 18:10. I am going to be in DC that weekend and am considering flying from IAD to JFK on DL arriving at JFK at 14:39. Will this be enough time for me to connect between the two terminals?

I know about the Air Train etc etc so I don't need to know HOW to connect. I just want honest opinions as to whether or not I'm cutting it too close. I plan to bring a rolling suitcase and checking it planeside at IAD and retrieving it planeside at JFK so no need to wait for bags. I also plan to check in online the night before with AA so all I have to do is drop off my bag when I get to terminal 8/9.

Great you are checkin your bags plane side. In case you need to check your bags, DO NOT interline bags. 3x straight I had my bag delayed and when I finally got it, everything stolen from it.

You should have plenty of time to connect!

Yes, you'll have plenty of time to connect, and even quite a bit of time left over.
Good goes around!

You should be OK but the flights between DCA/BOS/BWI/PHL/BDL into JFK are often delayed so be careful. While the suggestion to NOT interline bags makes sense. Seriously consider and issue the ticket as a single interline ticket to protect you in case of misconnect or other issues. Two seperate tickets offers NO protection. One ticket and they need to get you to final destination without addl fees or penalties if things go south.

As has been said, the Airtrain is not an issue. However, can you not take one flight earlier than that, just to give room for delays?

I remember how atrocious were DL's flights LEAVING JFK on a simple flight to BUF. Boarding was delayed 45 mins and there was a gate change marathon, running between two gates. hahahah luckily it wasn't two terminals!!!

Though it may be a short hop, but don't take it for granted. If it leaves you a bit more time, it is much better than getting a coronary running to your next connection!

Thanks for the help! Unfortunately, as I alternate work weeks between NY and London, my tickets are always bought long in advance. Now this family thing in DC has come up so I have no choice but to have two separate tickets.

COFan, did you ever buy the AA Airpass? Fixed rates help protect you against industry-based fare increases.

His flight can be delayed two hours, and still have time to spare.

You should be ok, but why not book AA DCA-JFK just to be safe?

I would not take any chances with DL to JFK. Even if the time between flights is generous. First, the flights are prone to heavy delays. The other problem with DL is the lack of terminal space, which often results in sitting on the ground for 45-60 minutes waiting for a gate. This may not be as much trouble with a CRJ flight but I think flying on DL and connecting to JFK is risky.

Is there a reason you can't do DCA-JFK on AA?

I would agree with this post. If you can at least get on AA then they can check you in all the way and you stand a chance if there is a delay. AA has plenty of gates as compared to DL which is strained in JFK with more flights then gates at peak times (afternoons)

DL is alreay starting to pull down its schedule post- Labor Day so the gate crunch isn't quite as acute... but ATC delays affectsevery airline at JFK equally. The fall is much better on ATC delays as well. Unless AA doesn't route its planes in/out of JFK, they are just as likely to be delayed.

Frequent Flyer reasons. I know it's a short flight, but every little bit counts (especially if it means I don't need to do a DL mileage run at year end).

However, if AA will check my bag through to LHR even though I'm flying on two separate tickets, I will probably end up just flying AA. Can anyone confirm this?

Call AA and speak with reservations have them cross reference the PNRs and note it in each one. Additionally, Even after change fees you might find that AA can be very cost effective if you price LON-NYC and LON-WAS they are pretty close price wise. Hence. You may be able to get the full routing for the cost of a change fee and possible modest add collect on the same PNR.

When I read this post I couldn't help but think...You are going from the dregs of JFK at DL to one great architectural monument! Brace yourself. LOL
