Charleroi (CRL) Airport: A Couple Of Questions

Fri Sep 07, 2007 2:12 am

The most important one: are there really plans to link the new airport terminal to the train line to Brussels? When? If not, why? A question of money or another belgo-belgian complicated issue? Well, if I am not wrong, the distance between the new terminal and the actual line is more or less 4-5 km., so money shouldn't be the big problem here. Any information appreciated.

Side questions:

1) I've seen a lot of times a couple on Mil-Mi-26 parked at CRL, belonging to SkyTech, but never-never a pinch of life around them (I mean, maintenance work or similar) and, of course, I've never seen them flying or at least somehow moving. Do they really fly? When? What for? It must be ruinous just to have 2 so big and wonderful machines idle all the time.

2) I've also seen often B-737 and Gulfstream of "United States of America" operating at CRL. Why there? NATO headquarter at Mons or what?

Thank you for your help

Hi Spantax,

It's actually very difficult to find reliable information on this subject ! The walloon regional government has publicly stated that a train station @ CRL airport is a top priority (articles from 2005 and 2006). Not many (known) acts have followed so far... except that the regional government has agreed to pay EUR 80 millions of the SNCB / NMBS debt interests (for the period 2006-2015) , in exchange for the promise of future investments from the SNCB / NMBS in Wallonia (including the CRL station). Source : La Libre newspaper, May 24th, 2006.

Technical studies have already been conducted. They concluded that there are two possibilites for the new station :

1. Build a station north of the E42 highway, i.e. something like 1 kilometer away from the new terminal. Main advantage : low cost because of the relatively light infrastructure needed as it would be located in open land. Main disavantage : a shuttle service (bus) would be necessary to reach the airport terminal.

2. Build the station directly in front of the terminal. Although ideal from a passenger perspective, this solution would be very expensive, as complex infrastructure would be necessary to reach the terminal without disturbing the nearby (important) business park ("Aeropole"). Rumours talk about 450 millions EUR ! Recent rumours (end of August 2007) relayed by the (not always reliable) newspaper "La DH" say that solution 2 would already be selected...

Both solutions would see the station connected to line 124 (northbound to Brussels) and line 140 (southbound to Charleroi) in order to allow a Brussels - CRL - Charleroi journey.

As to when... Well, no public information is available...

I've noticed exactly the same and have no answer. I asked the same question as your #1 in 2002 (!) and received no answer. See :

Hope this helps a bit...
