MIA-MCO With DL In The '80s

Fri Sep 07, 2007 5:19 pm

In late december 1987 (I was 3!), I flew with my parents on a flight from MIA to Orlando with DL. My father tells me that the flight was operated by a 707, but my mother disagrees, and says it was a smaller a/c than a 707.

Anyone knows what a/c type DL used to operate between MIA and Orlando IN 1987?

Thanks

Not a 707. L1011 maybe...

More than likely a 72S. However, I believe DL did have some DC8's still in the air back in 1987. That could be a possibility as well.

Not trying to get off topic but I sure do miss the days of large aircraft/short haul routes. I remember seeing so many of the big planes at airports in Florida on my way to see my grandparents. I remember flying an L-1011 from Memphis to Atlanta and then another to Ft. Lauderdale! That was in the late 70s.

Did Delta own 707s? I remember flying a DC8 out of MEM once.

Delta never flew 707's. I'm positive about that.
It was probably a DC-8, which Delta still had in the late 80's. If not a DC-8, maybe a 727.

Delta's fleet consisted of the following types in 1987:
B727-200
B737-200
DC-8
DC-9
DC-10 (acquired from Western)
L-1011
B757-200
B767-200
MD-88

I'm 99,9 % positive Delta never operated any 707's, and I know for sure they did not operate 707's in 1987. Midway7 is correct that Delta still flew DC-8 aircraft back in 1987. They still had some DC-8-73 in the air, so hat might be your best bet. The general public might easily mistake a DC-8 for a 707. However DL also flew 727-200 and L1011 aircraft intra-Florida.

Hope this helps.

Best regards

I'm sure you're right. It must have been a DC-8.

Although they were long gone by 1987, DL flew Convair 880's, which were usually mistaken for a 707 or DC-8. I personally have flown on every jet type DL operated, including the 747's and Convairs.
I love to fly, and it shows!

Wow...I was under the impression that the DC-8 was out of service by the early 80s. Delta really flew them up until 1987? Does anyone know which routes? Who flies them today besides cargo airlines? Who was the last to fly them domestically in the USA and when? This is amazing to me for some reason.

Delta's thirteen DC8-61's were updated with CFM-56 engines and were generally flown all over the domestic system. 727-232's were flown occasionally MIA-MCO, not to mention MIA-FLL. Short Trips! In those days, Delta flew just about any of their aircraft to almost any city in their network.

Since we are talking about the DC-8, I recall UA had them in service until 1991 or so. I would see them at ORD. In fact, I believe the 757 was ordered in part to finally replace the DC-8 aircraft.

In 1986 I believe they flew 727s on the midday and the last flight of the night into MIA around 8-8:30p was a DC8 Stretch and the first flight out in the AM to MCO was the same.

They also operated the DC8 to FLL and PBI from MCO during that period.

Looking at my paper schedule for December 1987, DL only had one flight on MIA-MCO back then, DAL68, operated with 757s actually, no DC-8s or 727s, unless of course there was an equipment substitution.

It was most likley a 727 or an L10 .

The DC9's did mainly short hops out of ATL. The DC8's were doing South Florida / NYC area. Lots were running from FLL / EWR. That was the last line I held on a DC8.

AA flys MIA-MCO 6 times a day two of the flights are with A300s and the rest with 757s. ATL-JAX DL 767 MCO-ATL 767 and 777 too. There are still a few of those flights not many though.

Delta operated DC-8-71 aircraft (not DC-8-73), which were converted DC-8-61s. The -63 and -73 models have longer wing tips (and probably a longer range, too) than the -61 and -71 variants.

As for the 707, that's one aircraft that was never operated by Delta.

Some time around 1990 or so I had a UA DC-8-71 on a DEN-MIA-FLL flight. 2 or 3 days later for the return, I was booked on the FLL-DEN portion but she took a MX. UA put me up and re-routed me the next AM on DC-8-71's to ORD and from ORD-SFO. That was my last long haul DC-8 experiences. I do recall seeing DL 8's at either MIA or FLL on that trip. I sure do miss those birds.

For sure..I think I recall seeing them at PHX , DFW and even LAX occasionally into the late 80's. DTW also saw the 8's quite a bit.

Trivia..At one time for the NYC-south Florida routes DL converted several (4-5?) into an all coach configuration and called them "Aero-Bus" service. IIRC it was to compete against either People EXpress or EA's A300's or maybe both.

Maybe a Dl'er from that time frame remembers more.

AA still operates two daily MIA-MCO flights with A300s. The only intra-state, scheduled widebody service in the United States.

Yes, indeed. DL pulled some of the DC-8's out of storage for the NYC Florida run -- 1976, or 1977 IIRC, just as deregulation was hitting and "K" class appeared on the scene. They were all coach. Never flew on 1, though .. I remember discussing them with friends in the old ATL airport Crown room .. (and the Eastern I club -- the competitors!!)
